Can my dog safely take gabapentin, Metacam, and joint supplements?

If this was prescribed by your vet , then this is the amount of medicine he needs. Gabapentin may make him a bit drowsy in the beginning, but that should subside after about two weeks. Gabapentin is against nerve pain. Tramadol is an opioid which takes some pain as well and Metacam is a non-steroidal antiinflammatory which takes away inflammation and therefore also pain. These medicines are safe, however watch your dog's poo in the first two weeks. If it is black or tarry then stop the Metacam and inform your vet.

Metacam is a nonsteroidal antiinflammatory drug which is a powerful pain killer. Gabapentin is also a very good pain killer, but it takes time for it to work and it sedates the dog initially. That is a very high dose if given all at once, it is 1.5 times the maximum recommended dose. 800mg spread out through 3 or 4 doses would be good. If your pet is in pain, gabapentin may not be enough. You should discuss a multi-modal pain protocol with your vet, often adding in steroids, NSAIDs, opioids, acupuncture, laser therapy, etc will be better than a single medication.

Yes, these two medications can be used together without any problems. I would caution you, however, that Metacam needs to be used very carefully in older cats because it isn't safe for cats with any degree of chronic kidney disease - this is extremely common in older cats, so I'm always very cautious about using it unless there has been recent blood work showing that everything is fine. If it was prescribed recently by your vet, then go ahead and use it - but if not, I would definitely recommend talking with them first to make sure they feel that it's safe for your kitty.

But tramadol can be used in conjunction with the gabapentin and a non steroidal anti-inflammatory medication ( or pred ) for chronic pain conditions. Take care.
