My dog has cancer. Is 800mg gabapentin safe for pain relief?

Hello. The range of dosages of Gabapentin used for analgesia in dogs is 10-20 mg/kg every 8 hours. For a 27 pound dog, this equals 123 - 245 mg every 8 hours. When used as an anticonvulsant, doses up to 1200 mg are sometimes used. If you are concerned, start with the 200 mg every 12 hours, adding a third dose if necessary. Thank you.

Gabapentin has quite a large safety margin, the maximum dosage is about 15mg per pound but even a higher dosage for a one time ingestion is not likely to cause any severe side effects. how much does you puppy weights?

That's a pretty high dose for a dog his size and may cause sedation. Gabapentin is a great medication for arthritis, but I'd start with about half that dose, and I'd recommend running it by your primary veterinarian to make sure it's appropriate with Obi's medical history and any other meds he might be taking. Hi, thanks for using Petco Pet Education Center, formerly Petcoach! I am so sorry for De O'Gee's diagnosis. The dose of Codeine he is on is the maximum published dose at 2mg/kg every 8 hours. I can not advise increasing it. You can increase the gabapentin but be aware that will increase sedation. The dose he was started on is below the 10mg/kg every 8 hour starting dose. You can increase the gabapentin to 100mg every 8 hours, but watch for sedation. I wish you the best!

If this was prescribed by your vet , then this is the amount of medicine he needs. Gabapentin may make him a bit drowsy in the beginning, but that should subside after about two weeks. Gabapentin is against nerve pain. Tramadol is an opioid which takes some pain as well and Metacam is a non-steroidal antiinflammatory which takes away inflammation and therefore also pain. These medicines are safe, however watch your dog's poo in the first two weeks. If it is black or tarry then stop the Metacam and inform your vet.
