Dog food for a young dog with angular limb deformities and arthritis?

Thanks for using Petco Pet Education Center, formerly Petcoach! Something that can be improved with the diet is arthritis. The best diet for that purpose in my opinion is the Hills Science Diet j/d. It's good that you are trying to make sure Jasper is comfortable! I would feed him a diet formulated for large breed dogs, you could even consider a joint specific diet such as Hills j/d or Purina JM through your veterinarian. I would also consider getting him on a joint supplement with glucosamine and chondroitin sulfate as well as Omega 3 farty acids. Depending on his comfort level you should talk to your veterinarian on whether an anti-inflammatories would be helpful long term as well. Good luck!

I'm not familiar with gout as a condition for dogs, so this answer is for joint health but not specific to a dog with gout. There is a food called J/D made by Hills that contains joint supplements that could helpful for her. Your vet will need to prescribe it and can make sure that it makes sense for her intestinal situation. Otherwise, a general adult diet from Hills, Purina, or Royal Canin with a glucosamine supplement would be good.

There is no food that promotes extra bone growth. It is best to feed your pet a balanced large breed food that helps promote normal bone growth, such as Royal Canin, Hill's Science Diet, Eukanuba, Natural Balance or Fromm large breed puppy. To promote healthy joints and combat arthritis, it is recommended to wait until your pet is at least 1 year of age, then you can start daily joint supplements such as Dasuquin, Rejuvenate or Cosequin. Also its best to not over-exert your puppy while he is growing. This means don't have rough play or exercise for more than 20-30 min increments, 3 times a day. That diet is excellent. However, the metabolic aspect of it is for dogs who need to lose weight. If Koko Rae is already in a good body condition, you can get the Science Diet j/d that is great for joints but does not have the metabolic component for weight loss. That diet alone can make a huge difference. Deramaxx is usually used on an as needed basis for pain control. You could also consider joint supplements such as Dasuquin and Cosequin. I am sorry to hear about Ralphie's issue with his leg! If he has never had an x-ray I would consider having your vet take one to see if there is anything that could be done. I do believe Hills Science Diet Large Breed is a great dog food. I usually recommend this or Purina Pro Plan large breed food for a large breed dog.
