My dog was sick, now eating. Should I still worry about dog flu?

Yes, it is one possibility but respiratory symptoms are typically accompanied by the canine flu. This could certainly be something else such as dietary indiscretion, ingestion of a foreign object which has caused an intestinal obstruction, infection, systemic disease, etc. I would recommend having Maui examined by a veterinarian so that the most appropriate diagnostic and treatment recommendations can be made. Thank you for posting your question. If you have introduced a new diet or treat prior to these symptoms arising, that could be the cause and could be a bit of dietary indiscretion. In regards to the canine flu, there are typically other symptoms that we will see and they do not fit the typical presentation. I would say that if their symptoms are no better after doing 24 hours of pepto bismol, I would have them checked out at the vet. Another possibility is that they both got into something toxic. I would not be worried just yet. Even though he was fully vaccinated he could still have acquired kennel cough (bordetella). That vaccine is not 100% effective. If they have been vaccinated against it and they do end up getting kennel cough usually the symptoms are less severe and the course of the disease is shorter so having the vaccine is worthwhile. Was he vaccinated for influenza (flu)? Again, not a 100% protective vaccine (just like out flu vaccine). This could be more serious if he caught the flu. Just monitor him for worsening signs - not eating, extreme lethargy, increased coughing, not drinking, ocular/nasal discharge, etc. If you notice any of those signs then I would take him to your vet for an exam. A little bit tired and mild coughing is not too worrisome at this stage. Hope this helps. Best wishes.

I am concerned that he may be dealing with a systemic illness such as liver disease or kidney disease or an infection. I would recommend having a veterinarian examine him so that the most appropriate diagnostic and treatment recommendations can be made. I would initiate a bland diet of chicken and rice and also add in a probiotic such as Purina fortiflora which can be found online quite easily. I hope this helps guide you in the right direction. As long as your dog has all his vaccines and they are kept up to date, he won't get deadly diseases such as parvo, distemper, or rabies from your mother's dog. There could be another reason why your dog isn't eating or drinking, and has thrown up. He could have a GI illness, may have eaten something rotten, could have a foreign body, or could have pancreatitis among other causes. Given that he has drank water and if it's stayed down, I can give you a home remedy to try to see if that helps. Withhold food for 12-24 hours, then feed a bland diet of boiled white meat chicken (no bones) and white rice in small amounts several times a day for a couple of days. Then slowly add back in his normal diet. If the vomiting continues in the absence of food, he vomits the bland diet, develops diarrhea, stops drinking water, starts vomiting water, or becomes very lethargic, he will need to see a vet right away. The flu can have mild GI signs but usually they have fevers, decreased appetite and lots of coughing and snotty noses with congestion. Distemper virus can cause Gi and respiratory sogns and profess to neurological disease. If chronic diarrhea is the main problem they can do dewormer just to make sure and test the pancreas function with a blood test. There is also a theist swab that can test for severe respiratory components to make sure it is nothing serious.

There are a few rare cases of dogs catching the flu from their humans, but generally the answer is no. I would recommend having a family member take him to his vet for a check up to see what's going on.
