My dog has a fleshy black mass near her tail. Should I see a vet?

Updated on September 23rd, 2025

Pet's info: Dog | Chihuahua | Female | 10 lbs

I just noticed a piece of what I thought was poop along my dogs tail by her butt a fleshy black mass that I took photos of. Should I take them and show my vet

It may be a yeast infection and inflammation causing the skin to be thick and dark. This can also be caused by a low thyroid level. I would take her to your vet for a thyroid check and a skin sample to see if it can be resolved with medicines. If not and it gets larger then you would be looking at surgery
