Is it safe to give my 55.5 lb dog the larger flea treatment dose?

I wouldn't recommend using it on Sunny since she weighs less than the dose range. While dogs aren't as sensitive to flea treatment overdose as cats are, the potential is still there to cause toxic symptoms such as muscle twitches and loss of coordination. It's best to strictly follow the weight guidelines to prevent any toxicity from occurring. I would exchange the Frontline for a dose in her weight range.

What breed of dog do you have? I suggest you call the manufacturer of the flea and tick treatment you have on hand. Look on the packaging for the phone number for customer service, or the URL. They should have a customer service number on their web site. This is what I would do as a vet as well, as it is NOT possible to just add medication on for a higher weight. Most large dogs will need less medication per/lbs as the weight increases.

You should also treat all bedding, sleeping and resting areas with an insecticidal household flea spray as 95% of the flea burden is present as eggs and larvae in the environment and only 5% are adults on your pet. Sentinel has no tick coverage and does not kill fleas. It only sterilizes the eggs. I always go up a size to be safe as most dogs gain weight but rarely lose weight. It has a good safety margin so using the 25-50 pounds medicine would be best. You will continue to need the Simparica or nexgard with this

Often times veterinarians may opt for the higher weight range in these preventative products when the weight is borderline between two dosages or when rapid weight gain is expected within the next 30 days. You definitely want to ask Milo's prescribing veterinarian what they think is best for Milo and if going up a weight range would be OK.

This is because the active ingredient amount is weight dependent. A bigger pet needs more of the active ingredient to kill the fleas than a smaller pet. It's fine to use these on your pets this month and next month. If they are close to a year old, they will not grow much bigger. I hope this helps!
