Why is my dog's skin flaky, itchy, red, and coat changing color?

I am sorry to hear about your concern for Luke. We can see patches of hair loss such as this from a variety of causes, ranging from allergies, bacterial infection of the skin, insect bites that got very inflammed, wounds, or a fungal infection called ringworm. Be sure to wash your hands after touching the area just in case, until you can have him seen.

As this condition is likely uncomfortable and can progress, I recommend having him seen by a vet as soon as possible. Your vet can take a sample of any discharge in the ear to determine if the itching is caused by a bacterial or fungal infection and recommend an appropriate treatment. In the meantime, you can get Luke can E-collar or "cone" to prevent him from scratching the ear and causing further trauma. I hope this helps and that all is well with Luke!

Thank you for your post! Leo looks like he has a bacterial skin infection. His long hair may make him prone to these as moisture gets trapped easily under his hair during warm times of the year. I would recommend scheduling an appointment with your vet to treat this appropriately. Leo may need a course of oral antibiotics along with topical therapy to treat this effectively. If you are unable to get to your vet soon, then I would at least recommend starting him on a shampoo and begin several supplements. The shampoo I find works effectively is Duoxo Chlorhexidine PS shampoo and bathing twice weekly lathering a minimum of 8 minutes at wash bath. There are some things that you can do at home if you are unable to get to a vet right away. I would suggest starting with a shampoo that is medicated such as Duoxo chlorhexidine PS combination and bathe him twice weekly until the infection is resolved. I would also suggest starting welactin omega-3 fish oil and essential 6 Spot On by dermoscent. If there is no improvement then I would see your vet for further testing and treatments. It is hard to say for sure without pictures being unable to examine him. I would recommend a chlorhexidine based shampoo such as Douxo PS chlorhexidine combination shampoo and bathe twice weekly until the infection is resolved. A spray such as malacetic conditioning spray should also be used and applied to the affected area 2-3 times daily until resolved. These can be found online quite easily and if you are unable to get these delivered to your area, something comparable should suffice. If the skin condition worsens I would recommend having a veterinarian examine him so that the most appropriate diagnostic and treatment recommendations can be made. I hope this helps! Poor Ezra, that looks miserable! This could be a number of things, including superficial pyoderma, demodicosis, sarcoptes, yeast dermatitis, and ringworm. It is most likely some sort of infection (whether bacterial, yeast, or parasitic) so I strongly recommend bringing Ezra to the vet. Your vet will be able to determine the cause, and Ezra will likely need prescription medication (antibiotics, antifungals, or anti-parasite, along with possible medicated shampoo) to clear the issue. This is unlikely to improve with anything over the counter, so it is worth having him seen as soon as possible. Additionally, depending on his age, he may have some underlying condition that might be making his skin susceptible to infection, such as allergies or hypothyroidismI hope this helps!
