How can I tell if my 8-month-old dog is in her first heat cycle?

A dog goes into heat once every six months. A first heat typically occurs after a dog is six months of age, but large breed and giant breed dogs go into heat later, sometimes closer to two years of age. The number of times over a lifetime depends on when the dog first goes into heat, and how long they live.

Unfortunately there isn't a way to tell if your puppy for sure had her 1st heat cycle or not. You can definitely ask the people she was with to see if they noticed her bleeding and having a swollen vagina. You also may get lucky and get her on the tail end of her heat, and her vagina will still be swollen somewhat. Most pets have their first heat cycle around 6-10 months of age.

If you feel like you can spot the beginning of a heat cycle right away you might be able to wait since she's showing no signs now, but I would definitely keep her separated from the male whenever they are unsupervised.
