My dog has a firm lump at his surgery site. Is it an emergency?

Pet's info: Dog | Mixed Breed Medium (23 - 60lb) | Male | neutered | 1 year and 8 months old

Columbus (19 month old 20kg cross breed) had a hernia/castration on fri. Today a raised lump has appeared where his hernia scar is. It's very noticeably raised, about 1.5-2 inches long. The lump is firm to the touch and does not move. He is not in pain but did not like it touched (no yelp or bite, just getting away from touch). My vet is closed. Should he go to emergency? The scar seems fine, no discharge or blood

Thanks for using Petco Pet Education Center, formerly Petcoach! It is possible that he has developed a hernia again and the concern would be that it could be causing him pain and discomfort, especially if he did not like it touched. The other possibility is a seroma which is an accumulation of fluid at the incision site though that seems less likely. I recommend that you have Columbus evaluated by a veterinarian perhaps tomorrow when your veterinarian opens again. If at some point he develops loss of appetite, vomiting or lethargy, have him evaluated sooner. Good luck with your boy!

If he is eating/drinking normally and isn't overtly painful you can try observing him until your vet reopens if they will open tomorrow. It is possible this is just inflammation from surgery or a seroma/hematoma which can occur at an incision site. If the area becomes more swollen/red, painful, has a discharge, or the incision starts to open, or he becomes lethargic/stops eating then a trip to the emergency vet is warranted. I would keep him confined to a crate or very small area so he has limited movement and he should have an e-collar on to prevent him from licking the area. You can also try icing the area- just be sure to wrap the ice pack in a dry towel to avoid having the incision getting wet. Place the ice pack over the area for 5-10 minutes every few hours if your pup doesn't mind. If he fights this then don't bother as we don't want to agitate him! Best of luck!

I recommend bringing Lola to a veterinarian. It is ok to wait until your regular veterinarian is open unless she isn't doing well. Puppy has a firm lump after hernia surgery. Is the hernia returning?

Coco may be having a suture reaction. A hernia repair has a three layer closure and the body must break down each layer of those sutures. Sometimes you can see swelling afterwards. Restricting Coco’s activity will help so that it does not pull so much on the tissue which causes additional inflammation. If you are noticing that it is still swelling and getting bigger, I recommend have Coco checked out again to make sure the hernia has not reoccurred. It never hurts to have the area palpated by the veterinarian. I hope this is helpful and please feel free to post any additional questions.

Why does my dog have a lump and swelling after neuter? Is it a hernia?

It could be a hernia, but it is unlikely related to the surgery since we don't handle that area during a routine neuter. I would recommend having the vet check it again if it doesn't improve after the NSAIDs, or sooner if Roman seems painful or stops eating and drinking.

What is this lump on my puppy's spay incision? Is it normal?

Larger dogs or dogs that are playful after a procedure can develop a seroma at the incision site. These firm bumps under the skin at the incision and are not painful. Sometimes they can drain and be fluid-filled. They will go away completely as healing takes place, but it may take a little longer than the normal 10 days for healing. It is still there after 2 weeks, begins to ooze any fluid, or gets noticeably larger, then I would have it rechecked. It's unlikely to be a hernia, particularly if it resolves on it's own. For some dogs, warm (not hot) compresses applied a few times per day can be helpful.

Feral kitten has a lump on his arm after neuter surgery. Emergency?

Hi and thanks for posting on Petco Pet Education Center, formerly Petcoach! It is hard to say exactly what the lump may be. It could be an abscess, a reaction to an injection given, or a tumor. I would recommend Nugget see his veterinarian soon to have this evaluated. Your veterinarian may take a sample of the material or tissue from the lump to help determine what it is so it can be appropriately treated. If Nugget is otherwise normal, I do not think this is an emergency. I would just be sure to have this evaluated soon within the next few days. I hope this helps and thanks again for posting!

My dog's umbilical lump is itching. Should I be concerned about it?

Hello. The problem with a possible hernia is if it is large enough, intestines can become trapped in the sac. The itching concerns me as, but I can not say how it may be related to a hernia. What does concern me is having a large lump of any kind in an older pet. I think this is something that should be investigated further. If your current vet does not seem to be overly concerned about this, then a second opinion at another practice would be a good idea.
