My dog got fire ant bites and is sleepy. Should I be concerned?

The bites may cause some inflammation and itchiness. If it is only mild irritation you may want to consider giving a dose of benedryl (1mg per pound of body weight) to her to help make her more comfortable. If the bites are severe however, she may need something more effective like steroids. If this is the case you will need to take Pecora to the vet to be checked out. I hope this helps. Best of luck. Poor Lady! Certainly the red ants could have bitten her, but I would expect to see swelling and redness in the areas where she was bitten. If you aren't seeing that, then I would be concerned she may have injured herself, and the limping on her hind limb is a sign of pain. She could have strained or torn a ligament or muscle. I recommend resting Lady for the next 48 hours. No running, jumping, or playing. Take her out to toilet on a lead only, and bring her right back in when she's done. If she still appears painful after this time, then I would take her into the vet for an exam. The vet can diagnose where the pain is coming from, and can dictate a treatment plan for it. She may also benefit from some pain medications, which the vet can prescribe. Please do not give her any human pain medications, as many are toxic to dogs and can be fatal if given.

That would not hurt. But, if he is doing OK, you can try giving 1.5 tablets of the children's 12.5 MG tablet benadryl to help with histamine release. If he begins to swell, have hives, or trouble breathing, he would need to go in.

The lethargy could be caused by the cortisone injection, the itchiness and biting could be due to an anal gland problem or allergies in most cases, if it is not the anal glands then the cortisone injection should help. if he remains extremely lethargic you will need to take him back to the vet urgently.

Getting bitten by an ant can be painful and cause an allergic reaction and scare them. Ingestion of ants usually does not cause many problems unless they got bitten in the mouth. I would try to rinse his mouth and clean the food and ants. You can give him an over the counter antihistamine such as benadryl to help from a reaction. If he is not alert and strong on his feet yet, then he should be seen by a vet.

If you have a cream at home containing steroids (prednisolone, hydrocortisone) it can help reduce the symptoms of ant bites, you will need to apply it 2-3 times a day and make sure Barry does not lick it right away (best to apply it before you take him for a walk).
