What can I feed my dog after surgery? Is pasta safe for his diet?

Yes, pasta and egg noodles are fine. So are scrambled eggs. Do not put any butter or spices on them. None of these items though are good for long term use. If she needs to be on a long term bland diet I suggest you get a prescription diet from your vet. That will be a balanced diet as far as vitamins/minerals, etc.

Many times after surgery, an animal's appetite can be decreased / absent as well as being lethargic / sedated. If it has been less than 24 hours, I would give it at least 24-48 hours before contacting the veterinarian that performed the surgery. Once the appetite returns, you will have an easier time getting King to take the pills. During the fast small amounts of water or ice chips may be provided. Never fast a sick animal, it may cause disease progression and death. BASIC BOILED RICE AND CHICKEN BLAND DIET RECIPE CARBOHYDRATE SOURCE: Boiled white rice LEAN PROTEIN SOURCE: Chicken breast, no skin and bones BOILED RICE: 1 part white rice with 3 parts water boiled for 20 – 25 minutes or until the rice is easily crushed. BOILED CHICKEN: De-fat chicken breast and boil in water for 10 – 15 minutes or until the chicken meat is easily pulled apart and cooked all way through. FEEDING INSTRUCTIONS Estimate 25% of your animal’s diet and feed that amount of the bland diet every 6 – 8 hours. The bland diet should be fed for 4 -5 days with no treats or other food sources until stools are firm. TRANSITION BACK TO A NORMAL DIET Never transition back to a regular diet rapidly. If stools continue to be firm then continue substituting the regular diet in 25% increments and feeding the combination in 2 day time intervals until the diet is 100% regular diet. You should follow all prescribed advice from your vet and report any concerns you have about Ciukas to them straight away. Without the lab results it is difficult to fully assess the situtation but I would recommend feeding wet food until the wounds are healed and the pain reduces; hills have formulated a "n/d" diet specifically for cancer patients which has some very promising results and may be worth considering until you get the results to delay any further growth.

Hi there! Phew Eazie had a big procedure done today. If the vet office is still open, give them a quick call because they know the specifics of his surgery. If they are already closed, in general what I recommend is to offer water ( small amounts at first) over night, and then as long as he's not vomiting, you can start introducing a little food in the morning. I also suggest starting feeding with a gentle bland food such as cooked boneless chicken breast or a commercial prescription food like hill's i/d. I hope he makes a full recovery!

Canned food is recommended only because it is easier to eat after oral surgery. You can soak her dry food until it is soft. The general guideline for an adult dog is 1 cup of food per 30lbs body weight divided into two meals. This is for maintenance, not weight loss/gain. Using this formula, Hazel would need just under 1/3 cup daily split into two meals. It doesn't sound, or look like, a lot of food but she is a tiny dog and doesn't need many calories.

He should receive proper pain medications that should keep him very comfortable, & this will do more to prevent nausea & loss of appetite than anything else. He should do just fine. Take care.
