My dog has a fatty lump on her breast bone. What should I do?

To do this, the vet sticks a small needle into the lump to get a sample of its cells, and examines the cells on a slide under a microscope. It's usually painless to the animal, and relatively quick to perform. Once the cause of the lump is diagnosed, the vet can discuss treatment options if needed. These are typically benign and do not cause any discomfort to your pet. However, the best way to determine this is by having a physical exam and likely sampling the tumor to make sure there are no cancer cells that make up this mass. This is often differentiated by a test called a fine needle aspirate (FNA) which is a pain free, inexpensive and easy procedure which in most cases will help reach a diagnosis. Sometimes a biopsy is needed for a definitive diagnosis. I recommend that you have her evaluated by your veterinarian for further assessment and treatment. I am really hoping for something benign. It looks like it could be a hemangioma (benign), however given her age and the appearance of the tumor, there is also a chance it could be more aggressive such as hemangiosarcoma (malignant). It would likely need to be removed and sent for biopsy to confirm/rule-out the presence of cancer. If you feel like your primary care veterinarian did not answer all of your questions, then you may indeed seek a second opinion. The appearance of this mass does warrant further diagnostics of it, especially if this mass has developed suddenly. These masses as they continue to grow, may occasionally bleed intermittently or have discharge. Hope this helps and best of luck.

Bumps can be benign, as you know. If your veterinarian has any concerns that this is more than just a lipoma, then they will likely recommend removal. The goal would be complete removal and hopefully be curative. But you can’t make a plan until she is examined. Hi, thanks for using Petco Pet Education Center, formerly Petcoach! Poor Pupsie! The growth is very large and I worry about the location. Since she isn't spayed I worry that the mass is associated with a mammary gland. Mammary gland masses can be cancerous or benign. The growth could also be a lipoma (fatty deposit) or a cyst. I highly recommend getting her in to your Vet to have it evaluated. Your Vet can discuss whether aspirating it is worth while or you should just schedule to have to removed and biopsied.
