Why is my 10-year-old dachshund fatigued with weight gain and neck swelling?

Updated on September 23rd, 2025

Pet's info: Dog | Dachshund miniature | Female | spayed | 10 years old | 12 lbs

First and foremost, I fully plan on getting blood work done after the holidays on my dachshund. She's 10yrs, her heart beat sounds irregular (like PVC), she's gained weight, fatigue, hx of seizures, and I think I feel her thyroid enlarged. Could also be just excess fat. I suspect hypothyroidism. What are your thoughts?

Thanks for using Petco Pet Education Center, formerly Petcoach! Dogs do not typically have enlarged thyroids and hypothyroidism usually causes the thyroid to shrink. There are other organs in that area-lymph nodes and salivary glands- that could be the cause of the enlargement. Fat is also a possibility. I wouldn’t jump to any conclusions at this point and recommend waiting until her exam and blood work to be sure. They may also want to stick a needle in the area of swelling to determine what it is. Good luck and kisses to Chloe!
