My dog has a fast-growing lump near her breast. What should I do?

It is difficult to tell what is going on with Panthera based on the picture alone. The lump in the picture almost looks wet, so I would be concerned about a potential cyst or infected gland. Since she is unspayed, I also worry about potential mammary cancer, which we see more commonly in intact females. It can present as firm masses under the mammary glands. Dogs can also get benign masses of the mammary tissue as well. The best course of action would be to take her to your regular vet to have them evaluate her. She may need a fine needle aspirate of the lump. This is when we take a sample of cells from the area and look at it under the microscope to try to determine what the underlying cause is. It is no more painful than a vaccine and can give a lot of information as to if anything further needs to be done for Panthera or not.

Unfortunately any skin mass can be cancerous but the good news is that most are benign. The only way to know for sure is the have a small sample of the mass collected and examined under the microscope. I recommend for Pepper to see his veterinarian. Sometimes the doctor can tell by palpation but other times they need to see the cells. Anytime you have a dark colored mass, melanoma is on the concern list. It sounds like Harley has some sort of infection in his skin. Abscesses, infected cysts, reactions to something stuck in his skin (like a thorn) and less likely some sort of tumor are all possible. Clean the area with soap and water and rinse it well. Then plan on making an appointment at the veterinarians office to have it evaluated. Make sure he cannot lick or scratch that area as this will cause further damage. The doctor will likely put him on an antibiotic and send you home with an appointment or special shampoo.
