My dog's face lump is shrinking with warm compress, see a vet?

Pet's info: Dog | Chihuahua | Female | unspayed | 7 months and 28 days old | 5 lbs

My dog had a lump on her face but sinces ibe been putting a warm compress on it its been getting smaller. She is opening her mouth 3/4 of the way now. I was wondering if i should continue or still check in with a vet in a few days. Ps she is acting more lile herself.

Hi and thank you for using Petco Pet Education Center, formerly Petcoach! I'm sorry Bella is having this problem. The most common reasons for a lump include inflammation/infection, a foreign body such as a thorn or other, a seroma or fluid filled sac, a hematoma or sac full of blood. Also an insect/spider bite and trauma are all possible. Based on her age, a tumor is less likely. Sounds like the warm compresses are helping and she is regaining more function. If the lump completely resolves I think you are in the clear. But if the lump persists, worsens, or comes back and/or the opening of the mouth is still affected, I would advise having your veterinarian take a look. A physical exam, cytology of a sample of the discharge or a culture may be indicated. Also an X-ray may be needed to assess the bone structures and the soft tissue. Good luck with Bella.

If these bumps appears on Bella recently in the last few hours, then these could be hives, insect sting or bite, or a mild skin irritation. It is hard to say for sure without seeing Bella in person. If they are very itchy and persist or seem to really bother her, I would seek care for Bella with her veterinarian soon to have these evaluated.

My dog has a lump or abscess. How can I help her before the vet?

Poor Ginger! I cannot say for sure without seeing her in person, but this looks like a tooth root abscess. I would continue the warm compresses until you are able to get her seen by your vet. If this is the cause, your vet will likely put her on some antibiotics and also recommend to have the tooth causing the issue to be extracted. I hope this helps and she starts to feel better soon!

My dog has a lump under her chin after a fight. Should I see a vet?

Hi there, It may just be a pocket caused by the fight that is now filling with fluid, kind of similar to a bruise but different in appearance because of the loose skin. I would apply a hot compress to the area (make sure it's not too hot) to help the fluid move around and absorb, but if it's still swollen in 24-48 hours I'd have you vet check. My dog has a strange lump. What is it and when should I see a vet?

This could be an abscess forming, a focal area of ringworm, or even a focal type of mite called Demodex. You can try applying a warm compress and keeping the area clean and seeing if it improves. Typically an appointment like Neosporin is it very effective but it likely wouldn't cause any harm. I would recommend having Jade wear an e-collar to prevent her from scratching at the area or rubbing her face on the ground as that can make it worse. If the area becomes increasingly swollen, red, painful or begins draining it should be seen by veterinarian. This is because that indicates your dog will likely need antibiotics and potentially the site flushed.

Ouch! I'd have that checked out by your vet in person, especially if it appeared suddenly or is bothersome to Bella. They can take a sample of the spot to rule out any more serious issues such as tumor growths, infections that need treatment, cysts, or see if it's something benign such as a skin tag or other small growth. Until you can get into your vet, it's a good idea to keep the area clean and dry, and monitor it for any signs of changes such as oozing debris, having irregular margins, worsening, etc, as these can all help your vet pinpoint the cause. An Elizabethan (cone) collar can also keep Bella from licking or chewing at it which can reduce irritation and prevent a secondary bacterial infection from taking hold.

My 7-month-old dog has painful jaw lumps. Should I see a vet?

Thanks for using Petco Pet Education Center, formerly Petcoach! These could be benign or malignant growths. These could even represent infection sites or lymph nodes. There is no way of knowing what it is just based on its appearance. This is often differentiated by a test called a fine needle aspirate (FNA) which is a pain free, inexpensive and easy procedure which in most cases will help reach a diagnosis. Sometimes a biopsy is needed for a definitive diagnosis. I recommend that you have her evaluated by your veterinarian for further assessment and treatment. I am really hoping for something benign. My dog has a growing lump on her face. Is it serious and what to do?

Hi there. There are many possibilities with a swelling like that. However, in that specific location I would be highly suspicious of a tooth root abscess. If you lift the lip and look at the tooth, often you can see abnormalities. Also if you apply gentle pressure to the lump you may see pus drain out over the tooth. Of course abscesses from other causes as well at tumor can not be ruled out at this time. Please have Gingi seen by a veterinarian as soon as possible.
