My dog was bitten on the face. What first aid should I give him?

Ouch! Poor Bones! I would try to clean it with a mild soap and water. I would put a cone collar on him to prevent him from licking it and put some Neosporin in the wound twice a day. Your vet will be able to shave the hair and close the wound with sutures or skin staples if needed. They will also be able to prescribe him the proper antibiotics and pain meds. I do not recommend giving him any human pain meds as most are toxic to dogs. I hope this helps!

It is an emergency, please try and take Simon to your nearest open vet or local emergency service to get him seen. There are no over the counter medications that would be safe to administer at home, I am afraid.

Many human ones are toxic to dogs and can be fatal if given. You can try putting a cold compress on his neck where he got the bite to see if that helps with his pain. I would strongly recommend that you take OJ to a vet. Dog bites are very nasty, and get infected quite easily. They often require oral prescription antibiotics and pain medications. Unfortunately, it is illegal for me to prescribe medications without physically examining OJ, and there aren't OTC pain medications that are safe for dogs. You can help him by getting him to rest, bringing food and water to him, and keeping the wound clean. Just use a warm wet washcloth or gentle water spraying, don't use alcohol or peroxide on the wound.

Oh my. This looks like a pretty serious injury. Your poor fur baby needs to see your local vet to have this wound managed well. The only thing you can do over the counter is to flush the wound with Betadine diluted 50:50 with warm water and then sterile saline daily. The vet will investigate this area to see if any stitches or staples need to be placed and also get your poor baby on oral antibiotics (ie Clindamycin) and anti-inflammatory medicine (ie Rimadyl). Without proper closure and antibiotics, this wound will likely not heal well. I understand that you don't have much money, but she almost certainly requires pain medication, anti-inflammatory medication, and antibiotics. The wounds on the face should be clipped around then cleaned with antiseptic in order to disinfect. Depending on the size of any wounds, they may need to be closed with stitches.
