My dog has a new eyelid growth that's getting bigger. What is it?

Fortunately, the majority of eyelid masses on dogs are benign Meibomian gland adenomas. As long as the mass does not start growing significantly, bleeding, or causing Murphy to scratch, continue monitoring progression of these masses with photos to show to your vet in August. If anything changes significantly or seems to bother Murphy, he should go in for an exam sooner. Since he has fear-based aggression (very common!) and will need to have his eyes thoroughly examined, consider calling his vet to ask if he should have a sedative at home prior to his exam both to decrease stress and allow for a more thorough exam. It is not uncommon for older dogs to get benign growths on their eyelids. Usually these do not cause much problem. If it continues to grow and his eye is red or has more discharge than normal then I would take him in for an exam. It is a growth on the upper eye lid. It is still small but some of these growths have tendencies to get bigger over time and potentially cause problems. It may, for example start rubbing on the eye or it may change the shape of the upper eyelid. I would suggest you to take Beau to your local vet for full clinical examination and to decide what to do with this small growth. One option is to surgically remove the lump. The other option would be to wait and see if the lump is going to get bigger and cause any problems.

Hello, thank you for your question about Chloe. Based on the photos that you've attached and the symptoms that you are describing it sounds like Chloe may have a mass/tumor on her eyelid. These are generally benign and do not lead to systemic problems. Other possible causes include a cyst or local infection. Since this lesion is growing in size I would recommend having Chloe seen by your veterinarian. If it continues to grow it may lead to problems on the surface of her eye. It is difficult to say for sure without seeing it in person but it looks like a meibomian gland cyst. They have small gland along their eyelids that will get clogged and form these which resemble tumors. If she previously had one removed in this area, this could be that one growing back or a different one. If it isn't causing her eye to be irritated, red, or to squint then you could just watch it. If it is growing or irritated her eye or if you are unsure, I would have your vet take a look at it. It is always easier for a vet to remove it while it is small than waiting until it becomes really large. I hope this helps!

I am afraid that this red mass looks like a tumor or multicystic mass. This is definitely something that needs to be seen by a vet as it a) keeps your dog from closing his eye lid which can damage the eye to the point of losing vision (will dry out the cornea), and b), tumors can grow invasively, ie destroy the eye. Your vet will examine the mass, possibly take a little bit of tissue to examine under the microscope or send in to a pathology lab and then, depending on the findings, discuss treatment options, which could include removal of the mass alone (if possible), medication to remove it or make it shrink, or even removal of the eye. To me, this looks like a Meibomian gland cyst. These are best removed surgically. It is unlikely that it will go away on it's own. It will likely continue to grow. The surgery will remove part of the lid margin, and then close with a suture. They heal very well.
