Can I give my dog extra prednisone for comfort before euthanasia?

NOOOOOO!! Please don't give her aspirin or ibuprofen. That is absolutely contraindicated in a dog that is on steroids! You cannot mix steroids (prednisone) and non-steroidals (like aspirin and ibuprofen). This can cause a serious problem (namely GI ulceration that can perforate, liver failure and kidney failure). Non-steroidals will not help at all with cancer anyway; steroids will. If anything, you should talk to your vet about increasing the prednisone dose again. Every 3-5 days is an extremely low dose and is probably not doing anything at all. She needs to be on a very high dose when you are treating cancer. Please call your vet with your concerns and get her back on a higher dose of steroids. Hope this helps. Best wishes!

I am so sorry for this sad news. I would call your vet and see if they can give her any fluids to help hydrate her and get her started on an appetite stimulate. They could also possibly give her an infection of cerenia or Zofran which are great to help with nausea and vomiting. Unfortunately, she may need something to help with the nausea so she feels better and more willing to eat and drink. If you can figure out a way to make her eat and get the pred in her, it will make her feel better. The vet may even have an injectable form of prednisone or some other type of steroid that could be beneficial if you can't get the oral type in her. If these things don't work and you don't want to take her to an oncologist, then I would conisder her quality of life and euthanasia may be the best option for her. Poor girl. Yes anxiety medication can be given and prescribed by your vet. There are no options for this over the counter. I would try Trazodone, which is an anti-anxiety medication that works quickly to calm pets for stressful events like this. Ask your vet if she can be given this, especially if they have seen her recently, prior to her being seen for humane euthanasia. I send all my best and I am sorry that your pet is reaching end of life terms, but it sounds like you are making the best decision for her considering her poor quality of life. Prednisone is very effective in managing arthritis, especially in a palliative care setting and you are happy she is comfortable and has a good quality of life then yes, continuing to monitor her at home for any progression should be your decision

I'm very sorry to hear that you are saying goodbye to Dublin today. Unfortunately, there are no over the counter pain medications that are safe for dogs. Talk to the vet who will be euthanizing Dublin to discuss any sedative or pain management options. Most vets will offer sedation prior to euthanasia to make everything as peaceful and comfortable as possible.

Poor Sasha! I would talk to your vet before giving her her next dose. She may just not be able to tolerate that large of a dose at once. Your vet may be able to adjust the dose for her. If she isn't eating or drinking and c mutinies to be lethargic then I would recommend taking her back to your vet for another evaluation to ensure there isn't anything else causing her to be so lethargic. I am sorry you receive bad news and that she is having to go through this. Please know you are in my thoughts and I hope she starts to feel better really soon.

Unfortunately, by law it is illegal for the experts at Petco Pet Education Center, formerly Petcoach to say it's safe to give an extra dose of medication without seeing the animal in person first. That's because doing so requires a veterinary client patient relationship which cannot be achieved via an internet forum. If he's in a lot of pain, I would give his vet a call now to discuss if they feel it's safe to give him some extra Previcox. Best of luck.
