Why is my healthy dog shedding fur excessively with no skin issues?

Pet's info: Dog | Mixed Breed Small (up to 22lb) | Male

Hi there! My dog keep shedding his fur. I'm not sure why. There's no sign of dead skin or rashes on the skin. It's just that his fur is shedding. He looks healthy and active. He doesn't look sick or anything. I want to know what's the treatment for this? Obviously, it's not normal. But can you please help me and my dog? Also, can you identify the breed of my dog? I'm not sure what he is since he was a gift to me. Thank you so much!

I am most suspicious of mange with this distribution of hair loss. There is not much else that causes them to lose hair in these areas as a puppy. In order to get this diagnosed and treated appropriately, you'll need to take him to a veterinarian. It's best to take him as soon as possible, because this will get worse and will take longer to treat.

He doesn't appear to be a specific breed. My guess is that he is a cross of either a German Shepherd, or a Schipperke. I would have to know his age and examine him in-person to narrow this down.

Allergies is another possibility but I would have Prince examined by your vet to have the appropriate tests performed (such as a skin scraping to check for mites) to get Prince the most appropriate treatment. My husky is losing hair in patches with black skin. Is this normal?

No, this hair loss does not sound normal and it does not look normal in the picture. Reggie could have a skin infection, fungal infection, or mange among other things causing his hair loss. Without seeing him in person, I can't say for certain what is going on. He does need to see a vet to have this diagnose and treated. I recommend giving his vet a call now to make him an appointment. What causes puppy dry skin, hair loss, and shedding on his back?

Dry skin does not generally progress to hair loss and shedding. I would be more concerned that Kane is dealing with an infection in his skin. Demodex mites and ringworm (which humans can get) both can have this appearance. I would recommend to take him into the vet to have an exam and a skin scrape to test for mites. My Siberian Husky is losing hair excessively. Is this normal shedding?

I'm sorry but it is difficult to tell anything from the photo. If there are no bald spots present them I am guessing it is normal shedding for that breed of dog. We call it "blowing their coat". Why is my dog's fur falling out in chunks and changing color?

It might just be normal shedding but it could also be caused by a medical condition. You could bathe him with a moisturizing dog shampoo, brush him and add an omega-3 supplement (Free Form Snip Tips) and see if that helps. The black spots could just be normal pigmentation of his skin. If the excessive shedding and spots continues then he should be examined by a vet to determine if there is a problem. Your vet can do some testing to help diagnose. He could have a skin infection, mites, flea allergy, hypothyroidism, etc.
