Why is my dog excessively licking one paw? What are the causes?

Poor Ellie. If she is licking it occasionally I would try to give her some Benadryl. Licking is usually a sign of itching but it can also be a habit the do to help calm themselves. Some dogs do it right before bed to help go to sleep. If it is happening a lot and she is causing her white fur to turn a reddish-brown color then she likely needs to be seen by your vet. Your vet will be able to determine the cause of the itching and get her started on a stronger allergy medicine and antibiotics if needed. I hope this helps. If there are no open wounds soak her feet in a epsom salt soak for a few minutes and rinse well. If there is any open wounds, peeling of paw pads or oozing then she need to see a vet. There are booties you can buy to protect her feet if she is out playing on rough ground. Do not walk her on pavement if it is hot to the touch. Some dogs may lick their feed due to allergies or contact irritation. Keep her feet clean and dry. Wiping her feet with a damp cloth after walking can help remove surface irritants.

It's hard to say if Spot started licking the paw because of allergies or a wound. Excessive licking of the paws can cause secondary trauma to the skin and pads. Pads can take 6-8 weeks to completely heal, so preventing licking and protecting the pad is the best treatment. If the skin between the toes is also affected, I would recommend having Spot examined by a a vet to determine if there is an active infection. Allergies can cause paw licking, but it is generally on 2 or 4 feet, so I think it is less likely in this case.

It is possible Bailey is having an allergy or soft tissue trauma to the foot. I would recommend an e-collar (cone) to prevent licking. You can do Epson salt soaks 2 times a day and give over the counter anti histamine. However if it is not improving I would recommend taking her to a vet for a closer look. Hope she feels better!

Poor pup! If Princess is licking her paws to the point that they are bleeding, this is definitely not normal. The most common cause of excessive licking or chewing of the paws is an allergy problem - either seasonal environmental allergies or food allergies can cause this. Other possibilities would include a bacterial or fungal skin infection in this area, or even skin mites (mange). I would recommend having Princess examined by a vet as soon as you are able to - he/she can do some simple skin tests if needed to help diagnose the problem and get her started on appropriate medication to treat it. In the meantime, I would recommend getting an e-collar (plastic cone) for her to wear to prevent her from continuing to lick her paws and make things worse.

A visit at your local vets is recommended to make the definite diagnosis and to start treatment for Koda. In the meantime, try and stop Koda from licking the paws as he will likely make the skin more inflamed. Using a head collar or bandage the paws (and change the bandage daily) may be necessary.

The most common reasons that dogs lick and chew at their paws is allergies. She could have an allergy and/or a seondary bacterial infection. You could soak her paws in a warm Epsom Salt solution and see if that helps. Otherwise, she should be examined by a vet for treatment.
