Dog burping a lot but otherwise normal. When should I be concerned?

It could very well be an upset stomach. Monitor Nova to see if the vomiting continues. An ER situation presents itself as a pet that is continuously vomiting without stopping, pale gums, or the pet being unresponsive. Give her time to see if her stomach settles. Fast her for the next 12 hrs and then try a bland diet of boiled plain chicken and rice or cottage cheese to see if that helps settle things down. If she continues to wretch for more than an hour, continuously, or ever seems like she is in despair, then yes its best to take her to the ER for further evaluation. If the signs are not persistent and are gradually resolving, there is no need for a veterinary consultation at this stage. Continue with the same diet in small portions for the next 48 hours. I would definitively recommend a veterinary check up if the signs persist or you notice diarrhoea, vomiting, lethargy or inappetence.

Something could be painful there or on her back causing Holly to yelp. Since she is otherwise acting normally, keep an eye on her for now and if this behavior continues, have her seen by a vet. Best of luck.

Hi, thanks for using Petco Pet Education Center, formerly Petcoach! Poor Buckis! Just be sure he is burping and not non-productively retching (trying to vomit but not bringing anything up). Non productively retching with a swollen belly and/or pacing is an emergency. If it is just occasional burping and he is resting comfortably then just continue to monitor him and follow your Vets recommendations. I hope this helps and I wish Buckis a speedy recovery!

I am very sorry to hear that Nova is experiencing these problems, I am sure it is very unsettling for you both. There are a number of potential causes of such clinical signs, including dietary indiscretion, pancreatitis, parasite infestation, infection, and ingestion of a toxin or poison. I would believe the most likely cause is a dietary indiscretion, as puppies are known for getting into things they shouldn't. Because you have only noticed one episode, I would continue to monitor Nova at home. Rest Nova's gastrointestinal tract by holding back food for a few hours. Then you can continue with a bland and easily digested food of the boiled chicken breast and white rice diet and provide plenty of fresh water. I also find that boiled, mashed skinless sweet potato is helpful for diarrhoea if it were to begin. If Nova does not improve, has profuse vomiting or diarrhoea, you notice fresh blood, Nova seems lethargic, in pain or depressed I would advise a trip to the veterinarian. As long as she is acting ok you could monitor her for additional signs. If she starts retching, seems uncomfortable, starts drooling, is painful, or the distension persists then she should be examined by a vet. Your vet can take an X-ray to evaluate her abdomen and determine the exact cause of her problem.
