My dog with EPI has terrible body odor. What's causing the smell?

It's odd that it improved when the [Giardia](https://www.petcoach.co/dog/condition/giardia/) was treated. My first suspicion for the ongoing odor is that she may be licking at her anal glands or eating her own (or someone else's) poop. Ideally, have her examined by a veterinarian just to make sure there are no wounds, irritation, etc in her mouth or throat that maybe contributing. You r vet can also check her anal glands to see if they seem full or irritated which could lead t her having a tendency to lick at them a lot. If her anal glands are fine, and her mouth is fine, use a daily product for dental health. [CET products](https://us.virbac.com/cet-veggiedent-fr3sh-dental-chew-for-dogs) contain chlorhexadine which kills bad breath causing bacteria. You could try bathing him with a medicated shampoo that is antifungal and soothing to the skin. Make a lather and let it set on the skin for 5-10 minutes, then rinse thoroughly. Bathe 3 times a week for 2 weeks. If the smell is still there, then Wyatt should be re-examined by the vet. Chronic yeast infections can be caused by food allergies or underlying immune disorders, which could be caused by endocrine diseases like hypothyroidism or Cushing's. It could be Precious has a skin infection caused by yeast leading to that smell. The only way to know for sure is to have her seen by a vet. The vet can diagnose the cause of the smell, and can treat her for it. Since the smell is so bad, I'd take her into a vet today or tomorrow. Best of luck.

Hello. There could be more than one issue going on here, although the symptoms of some conditions can overlap. Bad breath can come from tooth decay, gingivitis, or even some stomach issues ( gastric reflux ). The shedding could just be a factor of the time of year ( mine are beginning to dump their winter coats ), but low thyroid could actually fit with all three symptoms. Adding a good probiotic to Coal's diet daily can help with the diarrhea & bad breath, & I would recommend Purina FortiFlora being one of the better ones. I also like Proviable KP, as this is designed specifically for diarrhea & has the probiotics, too. Both are available over the counter. If the probiotic does not help the diarrhea, please consider seeing your veterinarian for some testing to make sure there are no more serious situations to consider. Fortunately, a foul smell does not necessarily indicate that something is wrong with your pup. It may be abnormal for us, but pending a dog's diet, the bacteria in their bowels, and how hydrated they are can make a big difference on the smell. Also, when they defecate, they can release their anal glands which has a very distinct fishy/foul smell. Otherwise, I would just continue to monitor her. If she is fine and behaving normally, I don't think this is an emergency. You can also submit a fecal sample to your vet to rule out parasites.

If you are observing skin lesions and an odor he may have both a bacterial and yeast infection. While some cases can be treated topically and with medicated shampoos, more severe cases often requires oral antibiotic and antifungal therapy. As a first line therapy, start with a medicated shampoo that can be used for both yeast and bacterial infections such as Malaseb or Virbac or products recommended by your veterinarian.
