My dog has an enlarged heart and is shaking. What should I do?

Coughing can be caused by heart failure. If this is a new symptom after starting meds, or is worsening, it would be best to let the vet treating Lola know so that they can either re-examine her or adjust meds as needed. If she is coughing a lot and is in distress, or is having trouble breathing, seeking emergency care is best.

Poor Mickey! I would take him back into a vet today, or at the very least give your vet a call. It could be that the current dose of medication he is on is not working as well as it used to, and the heavy breathing is caused by a build up of fluid in his heart. Additional medications can be added on as needed to treat heart disease, and doses of the medication he is currently on may need to be adjusted. Based on the radiograph you attached, the vertebral heart score (VHS) is on the larger measurement and overall the heart does have increased contact with the sternum. There does not appear to be evidence of heart failure, but I am limited with one x-ray view and no ability to adjust the contrast. I don't know what medication your veterinarian started Bono on but in this case, I would recommend starting omega 3 fish oil, Pimobendan (prescription medication that helps delay on the onset of heart failure and helps the heart pump more efficiently). I would also look into heart supplements such as Standard Process Whole Body Support and Cardiac support (if available in your country). I am sorry Harry does not feel well. It looks like according to the x-ray report he was diagnosed with possible dilated cardiomyopathy. This is where the left side of the heart is enlarged and not beating properly. The best option is to take Harry to a cardiologist for pets. They can do an ultrasound of the heart and determine what medications Harry needs. Most of the time these patients need medications for life. Unfortunately this is a fatal disease and needs medication for the heart to function properly. Hopefully Harry will feel better with medicines soon

If only Jessie could talk! This type of behavior could be related to something like anxiety or to pain/discomfort. I recommend to have her examined by the veterinarian who will check for evidence of pain on the physical exam. They may also check a urine sample or the anal glands as well. Since she can't talk, it's best to play it safe. If this is behavioral, try taking her for a walk or a play a game to distract her. Best of luck.

So your dog has arthritis in the right hip and a subluxation in the left hip. He may be shaking due to pain from these problems, and he may need pain medications. Do NOT give him any human pain medications. Many are toxic to dogs and can be fatal if given. Take him into the vet to get pain medications. Best of luck.

Shaking is usually a sign of pain, It could be related to the disc herniation, it could be something totally different, it's very hard to know without checking him. I would recommend taking him to the vet ASAP, this is obviously not a normal behaviour and this needs to be investigated and treated quickly.
