My dog eats grubs from the yard instead of her food. Is this healthy?

Updated on September 23rd, 2025

Pet's info: Dog | Beagle | Female | spayed | 2 years and 3 months old | 23 lbs

My dog eats a lot of grubbs from the yard and hardly eats her food. Is this okay? I am worried about her nutrition. I cannot get her to stop digging for them.

Eating grubs and not eating a complete nutritional diet is going to cause some malnutrition issues for your pet Maddie. I would highly recommend not leaving her outside and brining her indoors to stop this unwanted habit. Also you do have the option of making her an enclosure outside that does not allow her access to the soil. Perhaps a cemented enclosure that will keep her away from the grubs. You can also look into extermination companies that may be able to rid your yard of these pests altogether.
Another option is to work with a trainer to see if you can train the habit out of her.
I hope this helps and best of luck getting Maddie to once again eat her dog food on a consistent basis. Best wishes and take care.
