My Shih Tzu keeps eating crayons. Why is she doing this, is it safe?

Crayons are non-toxic, but the issue is that they could cause an obstruction. Do NOT induce vomiting at home. I would take Sage into a vet immediately. They can safely induce vomiting to get the crayons out of her stomach. Best of luck.

She's really cute! If you're talking about a chocolate flavored rice cereal, there shouldn't be a problem aside from a possible upset stomach from eating something unfamiliar. Chocolate toxicity is serious, but there is so little actual chocolate and therefore very little of the substance called theobromine that is what is toxic to dogs and cats. The darker the chocolate, the more dangerous it is. Unless she got into actual chocolate such as chocolate chips, bakers chocolate or ate a candy bar, she should be fine.

If Mary ate these items within the past 2 hours, then you should take her to a pet ER right away, where she can receive an injection to make her vomit. that way the plastic does not enter the intestines and cause an obstruction. Please take her to a pet ER now.

Hi, It generally is a good idea to only feed dog food. It is specially formulated for dogs and most are properly balanced and have everything they need. Human food, especially fatty foods can lead to pancreatitis and other health issues. The dog food does not necessarily have to be for Shih Tzus. Hope this helps!

Hello. Fortunately, there is nothing toxic in this product. However, there is a very small chance that this could lead to an intestinal blockage, if he ate any at all. I would go ahead & take a slice of bread, & apply a good layer of Vaseline to it. Feed Hikaru a piece at a time, allowing him to eat as much as he likes up to the whole piece of bread. The Vaseline will not be actually absorbed, but will coat any possible pieces of the clay helping things to pass through smoothly. The clay will possibly soften with the moisture in the gut & the warmer body temperature, too. You should see a softer stool in about 12-18 hours & may last for a day or so, but there should be no abdominal discomfort or vomiting. If you do see more than 1 episode of vomiting, or you think there is any abdominal pain or bloating, please see your veterinarian immediately. I would recommend using Forbid or bitter apple to try and get Rascal to stop eating the feces. Both of these are safe for dogs. The Forbid you put in the food and they eat as a supplement, which then leads to bitter tasting poop and the bitter apple you apply directly on the poop. I hope this helps! That was naughty of Obi to eat those pencils! It's good that they are non-toxic, but you are correct they could do some damage to his GI tract. It may be he threw up all the pencils he ate, so I would watch him for now. If he keeps vomiting, stops eating, you see blood in his vomit, stops drinking, he becomes very lethargic, or you notice blood in his feces, then yes I would take him into the vet. I would give him half a slice of whole wheat bread now and one with every meal for the next couple of days. This will form a ball of ingesta around the pencils and hopefully cushion them as they pass through the intestinal tract. I hope this helps!
