My dog wants a grilled rib bone. Is it safe for them to eat?

What it may do though is cause gastrointestinal distress which may result in vomiting, nausea and diarrhea. They easily splinter and can easily cause a foreign body obstruction or irritation in her stomach or intestines. It’s best to stick with pet friendly bones and raw hides from your local pet store, because they don’t have the tendacy to splinter off and potentially cause harm to your pet. Oh no, that's not good. This may cause some problems, but do not induce vomiting. I would keep a close eye on Snickers for the next couple of days. If you see vomiting, diarrhea, blood in his poop, lethargy, excessive drooling, or a loss of appetite, have him seen by a vet immediately. I hope this helps!

If Jenny hasn't had this before watch for tummy upset (vomit, diarrhea, lethargy, not eating). The bone is very hard and can crack and break dog teeth, so it isn't recommended for chewing. It's possible that he will digest it, but maybe he won't and maybe the bone will cause severe problems in his gastrointestinal tract, you will have to monitor him closely and see. if he starts vomiting, stops eating or if he starts suffering from diarrhea, constipation or blood in the stools you will need to take him to the vet to get it checked and treated.

Bones and raw food of any kind are a huge danger to any dog as they can cause serious infections, can perforate (poke a hole in) the intestines, cause gastritis, pancreatitis, and other issues. I would be very worried about a septic abdomen with Rowdy. If he is still not acting normally I would have him rechecked with your vet ASAP to do x-rays, a possible abdominal ultrasound to make sure there is no free fluid in his abdomen. If these are normal then your vet will likely treat for a gastritis/pancreatitis. If he can't stand and is having diarrhea, he could be very dehydrated and need IV fluids as well. I would strongly suggest pursing these other tests, especially if Rowdy is still acting the way you have described, with diarrhea and unable to stand. Best of luck with Rowdy.

Raw bones run the risk of transmitting harmful bacteria, including Salmonella or Campylobacter, both to your dog and any exposed people. These bacteria can be transmitted through a dog’s stool and saliva. Bones can also pose hazards for foreign body obstruction in the esophagus, stomach, or intestines. Poultry bones are inherently filled with air and cooked bones become more brittle, both of which can splinter leading to perforation of the stomach or intestines. Bones and antlers are also quite hard and can lead to tooth fractures. Instead of offering bones, alternative products such as Nylabones, Kongs, or the dental treats approved by the Veterinary Oral Health Council (www.vohc.org) are safer and more effective alternatives for dogs that like to chew.
