My dog's ears are floppy after surgery. Will they stand up again?

They will likely not stand up again as the ear hematomas usually heal with a degree of crippling of the ears. Even tho she had surgery, there may not be enough strength or ability there to keep the ears upright. At the end of the day it is a matter of cosmetics, ie we humans think it is pretty when they are upright, but the dog could care less and it may be more humane to just leave the ears alone now.

I'm sorry Jonah is having this issue. Unfortunately, the ear flap (pinna) often loses it's normal shape after ear hematoma surgery which I am guessing you are referring to?? Sometimes it will flatten back out some once the sutures are removed. I strongly recommend you continue the laser therapy. I have seen wonders done with the laser in regards to healing these hematomas. There is no way for me to tell you whether or not the ear will regain it's shape. I wish I could tell you but only time will tell. I know it's disappointing but in reality, it is the nature of the disease. It is no one's fault and just the way his body responded. There are no guarantees when it comes to any medicine/surgery in animals or people. I hope this helps and the Jonah's ear goes back to normal. I will keep my fingers crossed.

There are a variety of ways to treat an ear hematoma in dogs (oral medications, draining it and instilling a medication, or a surgical "tacking", as well as determining what the underlying cause for the hematoma is). They do need to be treated by a veterinarian, as they do not typically resolve on their own, and can become very painful/infected. After treatment, the ear may be the same, or it may have a "crinkled" appearance. I would recommend your dog be evaluated by a veterinarian to determine what treatment plan would be best. Good luck!

Great question! She is just fine like this. Ear hematomas do wrinkle the ear flap. Unfortunately, there is nothing that can be done to correct it. The best thing you can do is to make sure she doesn't get anymore hematomas by keeping her ears clean.

The blood is clotting and slowly will be reabsorbed. If Bonbon is shaking his head or scratching the ears the aural hematoma will probably come back. I would suggest to treat possible underlying otitis and leave the ear as it is now, without draining. Buster collar may be useful as well to avoid any scratching.

Well Marshall is about the cutest thing I have seen in awhile! If the injury on his ear caused a lot of build up of scar tissue, this could weigh down the ear a bit. Or if there is a build of fluid you may see the same result. I would recommend to have your vet do an exam to ensure there is nothing that needs to be done to help intervene. Either way, he is truly adorable with those big brown eyes.

I am sorry to hear about your concern for your puppy! Unfortunately in many dogs we can have changes in the carraige of the ears as they grow/mature. In some breeds, such as german shepherds, the ears will be taped by a vet or experienced dog breeder in an attempt to get them to stand in a certain manner, but this is not a gaurantee of the altering of the ear carraige. If you are not planning on showing your dog, I would accept her for ear sweet self and learn to love her funny ears (and they may continue to change as she grows). I myself have a lab mix with ears that do not match in their carriage. It gives them character!
