Why is my dog's ear red and inflamed? Is there a home remedy?

This looks like a very severe infection possibly due to bacterial proliferation inside the ear canal. Unfortunately antibiotics and antiinflammatory drops are needed in this case to be able to resolve the problem effectively.

It looks like your kid has a pretty severe ear infection there. The redness is inflammation and the gray area is thickening of the external ear canal from chronic inflammation. What would be best would be for your pup to be seen by your family vet for an ear exam and cytology. In order to treat this appropriately your vet will need to know if there are bacteria (and what type) or yeast or both in the ear canals and if the eardrum is intact. An anti inflammatory may also be needed because of the thickening. If ear infections are a chronic problem for your pup underlying allergy may also need to be explored. You should definitely not use hydrogen peroxide as it can cause serious damage to the ear, Benadryl will not help. It's probably an ear infection, often it cannot be seen from the outside. Ear infections are very common in dogs, it is usually caused by either yeast or bacterial disease. the treatment is usually simple and straightforward, you will have to take her to the vet and get the ears checked, then a prescription ear drops will be prescribed according to the infectious agent.

It could be from an allergy or the beginning of an ear infection. If it persists then she should be examined by a vet for treatment. She may need an anti-inflammatory and antibiotic to treat the problem.

Sorry about Bella's ears. Sounds like Bella may have an ear infection. Normally, I would recommend reaching out to your local veterinarian for an exam and treatment as ear infections require specific medications that treat yeast and bacteria. Occasionally, low grade ear problems respond to conservative therapy such as gently cleaning and flushing with small amount of 2 parts white vinegar and 1 part warm water. This is commonly called swimmers solution, which can help reduce bacteria and reduce growth of yeast in the ear canal. I usually recommend an eyedropper full of this solution in and around the ear canal, then gently massage the ear canal, then after shaking it out, wipe the ear clean with cotton balls. You could apple a small amount of Neosporin and Hydrocortisone cream mixed 50/50 to the inside of the flap of the ear to help reduce redness and inflammation. That said, the best recommendation is a complete exam of the ear and treatment at your local veterinary clinic. Ear problems can become chronic and require aggressive therapy if they get severe. He has a very stenotic inflamed canal, with what look like polyps. There isn't anything you can do at home for this, he needs meds to reduce the swelling and treat infection. He may require surgery if it is very severe.

Sorry to hear that Chance is so uncomfortable. It is difficult to tell you what to treat the ear with without knowing what is wrong. If you are unable to get a traditional muzzle on him, you might consider getting chance a basket style muzzle. Most dogs tend to like these and tolerate them much better as they are not so constraining. You can also train dogs to enjoy muzzle. Putting them on can be made in to a game. The best way to accomplish this is by first just holding the muzzle while giving your dog treats. Eventually, you want to stick your hand through the muzzle and give him the treats. Slowly, you want to move your hand back out the muzzle getting your dog's head close and closer to inside of it. Eventually, place the treat on top of the muzzle. I am sure you see where I am going with this. It can take some time, but I find this to be the most effective way to get dogs to not mind the muzzle. Back to the ear. I can not tell you for sure whether or not there is a bacterial infection, fungal infection, inflammatory reaction, or some sort of allergic reaction occurring. As a result, you'd have to just throw the whole kitchen sink at it. You would also have to know that by putting a wash or drug inside the ear without a vet looking at it, you will not be sure if the ear drum is in tact. The ear can also be cleaned out with gauze and q-tips. You do not have to worry about damaging the ear drum manually unless you start bending the q tip (don't do that!) Best of luck!
