It could be ear mites, and unfortunately I can't diagnose Peaty online because I can't see him in person or examine the wax coming out of his ears. Revolution treats ear mites, but I do highly recommend a vet visit for this problem. This is because ear infections in dogs can also be caused by yeast or bacteria, and in order to treat him properly, the cause needs to be diagnosed. Hi there. From your description, it sounds like Rolo may have an ear infection - this is a very common problem in dogs, and often causes pain and itching. You will need prescription medication from your vet to treat the infection, so I'm afraid there's no way around taking him in for an exam. But, there's no reason that this should be a particularly expensive visit. If the problem is fairly simple, it should just be the exam fee, an ear stain to determine what kind of infection is present, and the appropriate drops or ointment to treat it :) In the meantime, you can try gently cleaning his ear with an over-the-counter ear flush for dogs such as Epi-Otic or MalAcetic. This will not treat the underlying infection, but may help to make him a bit more comfortable until you are able to see the vet.

It is common for dogs to have ear infections which can also be itchy and have debris. Ear mites are microscopic so canny be seen by the naked eye.
