Why does my dog have a growing ear lump and a black tongue spot?

This could just be a benign growth but without seeing Mac in person, I can't say for certain. Any suspicious lumps should be examined by the vet. The vet can perform a test called a fine needle aspirate on it. To do this, the vet sticks a small needle into the lump to get a sample of its cells, and examines the cells on a slide under a microscope. This may be a cyst, or a small abscess, or an irritated tumor. Since Snoopy is an older dog, I recommend having this swelling looked at by a vet sooner rather than later, to make sure it's not a cancerous tumor. It probably is just a cyst, and nothing to worry about, but the only way to know for sure is to have your vet look at the swelling and potentially take a small sample of it with a needle to look at cells under the microscope for a diagnosis. Hello! 'Lumps' like this are typically either made of tissue or cystic and filled with debris/fluid- like a cyst. Sometimes appearance of the way they feel can help determine between the two, but other times the only way to know is to have it sampled and examined under the microscope. This would also allow you to know if it was a lump to be concerned about (ie will it spread or cause other problems) or a benign growth. If it is small and has not changed over the past few months to years then it increases the chance that it is a cyst or benign growth although, again, the only way to know for sure would be to have it sampled! Although a pic would help to determine the underlying nature of the lump, This kind of lump/growth needs to be ideally assessed by your veterinarian to have a definitive and specific answer. Usually there are two ways your vet can do that a part from examining it directly during physical examination. A biopsy can be taken under local or general anesthetic, otherwise a smaller sample through a fine needle can be aspirated (this technique is called FNA= fine needle aspiration). Differentials include skin cysts, infections, benign or more sinister type of tumors. This is likely just a cyst or possibly a localized infection. Since it isn't changing and your dog doesn't seem to be too worried about it, I wouldn't be too concerned. I would just wait for your vet to call you. If you haven't heard from them in a few days, I would call them to double check on the results. I hope this helps!
