Dog ear infection not improving with cleaner. Does he need a vet?

Pet's info: Dog | Labrador Retriever | Male | unneutered | 6 years and 8 months old | 90 lbs

My yellow lab has an ear infection in his left ear, it's red, spotted, and bleeding. I have been cleaning it out with some dog ear cleaning solution; but It doesn't look like it's getting any better. Is there something else that can be done?

Yes, cleaning solutions are good but it is likely that the signs you are describing are compatible with an ear infection and antibiotic+anti-inflammatories ear drops are needed.
I would strongly recommend a check up, an otoscopic examination (your vet will have a look down in the ear canal) and appropriate treatment.

Poor Halo! It does sound like he probably has an ear infection - this is a relatively common problem in Labs. You will need prescription ear drops from your vet to treat this problem effectively - ear cleaner alone won't get rid of the infection, so Halo will need a vet visit. Your vet will take a sample of any discharge in the ear for analysis to determine what kind of infection is present (yeast vs. bacterial) and prescribe appropriate medication to treat it depending on what is found.

Ear cleaners can prevent ear infections, but it cannot treat it. In order to treat an ear infection you will need to take Halo to the vet to have his ears checked, the vet will prescribe an antibiotic prescription ear drops that will clear the infection.

The signs you are describing are indicative of an ear infection. Sometimes, these can resolve with topical over the counter treatment, but antibiotics or antifungal medication may be necessary. I recommend using an ear cleaning solution or wipes to clean the ear once or twice a day. There are many options available in pet stores, but look out for something with a mild acid in it (salicylic acid or apple cider vinegar are good ingredients). If the condition does not begin to resolve on its own, Baloo may need to be seen by his vet for prescription medications. I hope this helps and that all is well!

Hi. It appears the mometomax isn't working well enough in Luca. I would recommended calling your veterinarian to schedule an appointment for a recheck and I would recommend oral medications versus topical in this case. He may need steroids as well. Good luck.

The veterinarian will examine her including inspecting the ear canals with a special instrument known as an otoscope. A sample will be taken from each ear canal to evaluate under the microscope. This will confirm an infection and determine the type. For example, she could have a yeast or bacterial infection or a combination of both. In other cases, ear mites are possible. Based on these results, appropriate treatment can be started. An ear cleaner is usually commonly used to cleanse and dry the canal. Then a medication is applied to treat the infection. Ear infections are painful and require prompt treatment. If left untreated, chronic changes can result that will predispose her to future problems. I hope this information helps!

This looks like a very severe infection possibly due to bacterial proliferation inside the ear canal. Unfortunately antibiotics and antiinflammatory drops are needed in this case to be able to resolve the problem effectively.

Aww I’m sorry to hear that Lil Boy is having a tough time. I agree that his signs are suspicious for an ear infection. Unfortunately, there is nothing really suitable for an ear infection over the counter. I definitely do NOT recommend putting anything in the ear (alcohol, vinegar, peroxide) as these can actually make things worse. I recommend seeing a vet sooner rather than later as it is easier and cheaper to treat an ear infection earlier on.
