Why is my dog trying to throw up but nothing comes out? Is it a cough?

I'm wondering if your dog actually has a productive cough - coughing can look very similar to attempted vomiting in dogs. It would be unusual for a dog to be trying to vomit but still have an appetite. I would recommend making an appointment to see your veterinarian - they may be able to help determine if this is a cough or if your dog is truly attempting to vomit and can recommend tests or treatments depending on what's going on.

Heart failure, respiratory infections, collapsing trachea, allergies, etc. Can cause coughing. It best to have a veterinarian examine Aurora to rule out different causes. Dogs cough just like we do. Sometimes it is productive and they swallow the mucus they cough up. In young dogs there are several intestinal parasites who complete their life cycle by migrating into the lungs, coughed up and swallowed. Any coughing dog should have a fecal exam and a broad spectrum dewormer. If she’s not on heartworm prevention then she should be tested for that as well, although she is pretty young to be able to have that be problematic at that age. Good luck ! Cough can be caused by an infection, heart problem or lung condition, it is important to first know the cause before treating it as treatment is different from condition to another. The most common disease causing cough is a viral infection called Kennel cough, this disease usually resolves without treatment within a couple weeks but if the cough is too severe it is recommended to go to the vet in order to get cough medicine and antibiotics.

It sounds like Maximus may have a respiratory infection such as kennel cough, which often causes coughing and gagging without anything coming up. Or, he could be feeling nauseous and trying to vomit - if his stomach is empty, sometimes this gagging can be non-productive. If he is acting normal otherwise and this problem just started today, you can try withholding food for the rest of the day and offering a small amount of plain boiled chicken and rice this evening to help settle his stomach. If this doesn't help, or if he continues to have repeated episodes of coughing or gagging throughout the day, then I would recommend having him examined by a vet - he/she can determine whether Maximus has a respiratory infection or a stomach problem and get him started on appropriate medication to treat it.
