My dog has a dry cough. When should I worry and see a vet?

My dog has developed a dry cough. It seems to stop if I massage her throat and isn’t always constant. Is this serious? Do I need to have her seen by our veterinarian?

Pets can cough for many reasons. If she coughs for more than 3 days, if she gets worse or if you see other symptoms of illness, I recommend to have her examined by the veterinarian. Until them, keep her calm so she doesn't bark or pant heavily. I hope this helps.

I would recommend a veterinary visit for Tootsie. At her age I would want to evaluate any cough that has lasted more than a few days. Cough can be due to heart disease but other conditions such as primary lung disease, collapsing trachea, a tracheal mass, parasites,or kennel cough or pneumonia can also cause a cough. After physical exam and listening to her heart and lungs the veterinarian will then discuss what they feel maybe going on. They may recommend doing chest x-ray's or sedating for a more complete oral exam. Many of these conditions can benefit from medication so it is worth a vet visit as soon as you're able to try to catch any disease process early. Even though she is having no other signs, a cough that has lasted this long should be evaluated. Thank you for using Petco Pet Education Center, formerly Petcoach.

Since it has only been a few days it is ok to give her more time. Kennel cough takes 2 weeks to resolve. If the cough worsens or hasn’t resolved in 2 weeks then I recommend a recheck and chest X-rays. I wish you the best!

My dog's been coughing for 2 days, sounds like she's gagging.

Misty is adorable!! If she was around other dogs within the last two weeks she could have kennel cough. I would recommend calling your veterinarian to have them listen to her chest. Coughs in dogs can be heart or lung related. If your veterinarian hears anything in Misty's lungs they may recommend X-rays looking for bronchitis or pneumonia. If she is lethargic, not eating, vomiting, has nasal discharge or has a fever I recommend a veterinarian sooner then later. My vaccinated dog has a dry cough and spits up white foam. Why?

Unfortunately it's impossible to know the underlying cause of the coughing without a physical exam and possible radiographs. Pets can cough due to allergies, infections or something more sinister. Even vaccinated pets can get kennel cough though it tends to be less severe (just like humans can get the flu even though they have the vaccine). Treatment is different for each of these conditions. At home you can try rest for a few days so no running or anything to cause panting. Keep her from barking as well. If you don't want to wait you can certainly have her examined today. Otherwise if the coughing doesn't improve after a few days or if it gets worse at any point, I recommend to have Sadie examined by her veterinarian. Best of luck.

My dog has a dry, raspy cough, but is otherwise acting normal.

It could be kennel cough, scratch in the throat from chewing on hard objects or swelling in the throat from being stung in the throat by an insect. As long as your dog is acting as normal, eating food and keeping it down you should monitor him at home. Kennel cough symptoms usually resolve within 7-10 days without treatment.
