Why is my dog dragging his butt, licking, and has a lump by his anus?

I am afraid I cannot see a lump on this photo, however if you can feel a lump near the anus it is likely a full or impacted anal sac. *You may need to take your dog to a vet to have it expressed, if he is bothered by it. Usually dogs start scooting on the floor when they have a bothersome anal sac.

This hard mass could be due to anal sac impaction or it could be an anal gland tumor, both of which would cause him to drag his bum on the carpet. Given Angelo's age, cancer is unfortunately always a possibility, and I would not squeeze this mass to try to relieve the pressure. I also would not wait until Tuesday to get him into a vet. If it's an anal sac impaction, it can rupture, and it's best to have them expressed as soon as possible. If it's an anal sac tumor, early treatment is imperative, as this is a malignant and very aggressive cancer. I would have Angelo seen by a vet first thing on Monday.

This lump on Flo could actually be an impacted anal sac, which would be painful and would cause her to lick at it. I would take her into a vet now to have it examined. The vet can determine if it is an impacted anal sac, and express it for you.

Your dog may have infected or impacted anal glands. This certainly would explain the discomfort and foul smell. I recommend getting him seen by your vet as soon as possible to have them checked to make sure that is indeed what is going on, expressed and maybe put on antibiotics to help him heal faster.

His anal glands may be full, impacted or he could be developing an anal gland abscess. You will need to have him physically examined by your veterinarian for a definitive diagnosis and treatment. If the glands are full, expressing them may resolve Theo's symptoms. If an abscess is forming or has formed, it will need to be lanced, drained and flushed. Theo will likely go home with antibiotics and pain medication.

Sometimes dogs can do this due to minimal impaction of the anal sacs and resolves on its own. I recommend that you continue to monitor Max for now. This is likely her anal gland that is inflamed and infected and likely to rupture. There are anal glands found on every dog that are just inside the rectum roughly at the 4 and 10 o'clock position that should empty on their own when your pet poops. However, some pets have a hard time doing this, and these will fill up and become infected. You will need to take Copper to your vet soon to have these flushed out, lanced, and then he will need to be placed on antibiotics and anti-inflammatory medication. I hope that your pet Copper gets this resolved soon. Talk with your vet about getting his anal glands expressed regularly at the vet to hopefully prevent this from happening in the future.
