Why is my dog still discharging after spay? Stump pyometra or UTI?

Stump pyometra is a common sequela to retained ovarian tissue in the female dog. This can happen when the surgery was performed, As the ovary continues to produce progesterone and estrogen in cyclical fashion, any remaining endometrium is stimulated and fluid accumulation within the uterine stump occurs, increasing the chance for infection during diestrus. Ideally an ultrasound is needed to make sure there is no remnant of the ovaries left. If antibiotics are not effective, a bacterial swab should be ideally performed to identify specific type of bacteria and most appropriate antibiotic.

No, that is not normal. She should be put on broad spectrum antibiotics. There may be an infection in the uterine tissue that is remaining in the abdomen (stump pyometra). A second surgery may be needed to remove the infective tissue. The bloodwork shows a high white blood cell count indicating infection. Some of her liver enzymes are mildly elevated but I don't think they are significant at this time. She needs to be evaluated for a stump pyometra. Hi Maleeka! I'm sorry to hear that Mira has had these ongoing issues. It is uncommon to have a recurrent stump pyometra. At this point, other issues should be considered, such as an ovarian remnant syndrome (a portion of an ovary remained after a spay or was present in an abnormal location), contact with any human hormone creams/ointments, or resistance to the antibiotics being used. A 5 day course of amoxicillin is not likely to treat this type of issue. At this point, I strongly recommend taking Mira back to her vet for further evaluation, including a physical exam, blood testing (primarily to check her white blood cells), and possibly another surgery. She may need to have biopsy and culture samples taken of the uterine stump. I hope this helps and that all goes well!

It could just be vaginosis but that usually clears with antibiotics. I would check with your vet what wayshe was spayed, if just her ovaries were removed she could still have a pyometra. Likewise she could have a stump pyometra. An ultrasound can usually determine this.

Your poor pup! If she isn't spayed, I would be very concerned that she has a pyometra. This is an infection of the uterus that is fatal without treatment, and it would cause a white discharge as well as vomiting. It sounds like your vet may have been suspicious she had a pyometra and tried treating it medically with antibiotics and anti-inflammatory drugs. Unfortunately the medical route often isn't successful, and surgery is needed to treat it. This means spaying her. I would take her back into the vet immediately, as this is a medical emergency. Hello, sorry to hear about Willow. This could be associated with an infection or her vagina or lower reproductive tract. Rarely, dogs may develop an infection of her uterine stump which is left after spay surgery. She may require more diagnostics and medications to treat this infection. Your veterinarian may be able to offer further diagnostics including an abdominal ultrasound and bloodwork to rule out a stump pyometra. A cytology of her discharge could also confirm an infection. I am assuming she is on an antibiotic. if not, then your vet should start her on an antibiotic. If she is on an antibiotic then you should call your vet as he/she may want to change antibiotics. After 4 days, I would expect any discharge to be decreasing.
