What can my dog eat after pyometra surgery? Safe fruits & veggies?

In all honesty, a diet isn't going to make a difference to a pyometra (uterine infection). The best way to treat that is to have Lucky spayed, and I would recommend doing that right away. At the very least, she should be on antibiotics. If she is being treated by a vet, you can just feed her normal diet. Best of luck.

Precautionary measures include getting a physical exam and blood sample taken prior to surgery to make sure there are no underlying health issues that would compromise her ability to make through surgery or handle the anesthetic given during surgery. During surgery, her blood pressure, respiratory rate, and oxygen saturation should be monitored. IV fluids are typically given during surgery to help maintain blood pressure and provide hydration. After surgery, her incision may be iced every 2-3 hours and she may be given antibiotics and anti inflammatory medications. Her incision should be check within 24 hours after the surgery to ensure there is no bleeding occurring or fluid building underneath the incision. A recheck exam should be conducted within 10-14 days after surgery. I hope this helps!

A pet who is suffering from a uterine infection doesn't need a special diet food, unless of course you are trying to get her to eat something while she awaits surgery at a later date. If she is also suffering from bad kidneys, then she needs to be on a prescription kidney diet such as Royal Canin Renal or Hil'ls K/D, prescribed by your vet. If her kidneys are healthy and it is just her uterus that is infected, then no special diet is needed. She just needs nutrition through her normal dog food or if she isn't eating her normal dog food, you can offer some boiled plain chicken and rice or tuna and rice to entice her to eat until she can have her surgery. Surgical complications of a pyometra surgey (infected uterus) are: systemic infection, wound dehiscence (opening of the surgery site) and of course the normal risks that come with anesthesia (heart rate drop, blood pressure drop, etc). Otherwise, we shouldn't expect any complications for any pet as long as the surgery is successful and you adhere to the after care instructions from your vet. Thank you for submitting your question regarding Skye. I recommend that she sees a veterinarian today. It doesn't sound like she is doing well after her surgery. I worry that she will become dehydrated from not eating properly. She may requires some fluids under her skin to help rehydrate her. Additional pain medication may also need to be prescribed. If she is nauseous and this is affecting her appetite, anti-nausea medication can be given. The initial doses of her antibiotics can be given by injection to get those medications started. Once she is feeling better, then it should be easier to give her these medications. In the meantime, do not give any over-the-counter pain medications as these can be toxic to dogs. I'm so sorry Laney is so sick! Unfortunately a pyometra is an extremely serious infection and it does make a dog very sick. Sometimes even with surgical and medical treatment, the dog is so sick that it cannot survive, but I certainly hope that isn't the case with Laney! You are doing the right thing by taking her back into the vet for more treatment, and it may be a good idea to have her hospitalized with the vet. If she is with the vet full time, she can have constant monitoring and they may be able to try medications that stimulate her appetite. I can tell you are fighting for her, and I would speak with your vet to see if they feel hospitalizing her is the best option. Give her lots of love as well, which I'm sure you are doing. Any surgery, especially abdominal surgery, can cause an ileus, or slowing of gut movement. If not watched, it can lead to constipation, but I would not worry yet. If she is eating, you can give her about 1 teaspoon of canned pumpkin ( not pie filling ) a couple of times a day. The fiber will act like a natural laxative. If she has not had a BM by Tuesday evening, call your veterinarian. They may recommend a stronger laxative. Take care.

It is highly digestible palatable diet that easy on the gastrointestinal tract. You can also add Fortiflora as a probiotic. Most dogs like the taste and it can help repopulate her gut with good bacteria after the antibiotics. I hope this information helps!
