My dog died after a dog fight. What are the possible reasons?

Hello. I am so sorry for the loss of your pet. It is just so difficult to say what went wrong. I would doubt it was the sedation, although there are better sedation protocols available that do not result in a pet sleeping so long afterwards. Perhaps you are in an outlying area where newer medications are not readily available. It is still possible that there was some injury that was just too awful for your pet to overcome. Many years ago, I attended to a dog injured in a fight where all the wounds seemed very superficial. Sedation to clean & treat the wounds went very well, the dog awoke promptly after we tuned off the anesthetic gas, yet the dog was found dead the next morning after doing quite well all day. Without a necropsy, it is impossible to say what happened. Best guess is a possible blood clot that broke loose & lodged in the brain or one of the vessels of the heart. First off, I'm sorry that you lost your dog so suddenly. Please accept my condolences for your loss. I'm only guessing here, but if he wasn't vaccinated, it could have been parvo that caused him to pass. It could also be that he had a foreign body, a severe GI illness, or if he was fed a raw diet, the bacteria from the raw diet could have made him extremely sick. Again, I'm sorry for your loss.

I'm so sorry to hear about the loss of your dog. There are many different problems that could cause those symptoms, so unfortunately an autopsy (called a necropsy in animals) would be the only way to know for sure. Some possible causes would include some type of toxicity (such as antifreeze or rat poison), an illness such as kidney or liver failure, or some type of cancer. Your vet could do a necropsy or direct you to a pathologist for more advanced testing if you want to try and determine a specific cause of death.

I'm so sorry to hear that! It's possible that she may have had a severe allergic reaction to the medication - it's very rare for a dog to die so suddenly after a dose of any chemotherapy drug, so it's hard to say if there was anything else that may have caused it. I would recommend talking with the veterinarian who was treating her about your concerns, as he/she would be in a better position to say what may have happened.

I'm very sorry for the sudden loss of your dog. With his history I would be suspicious of an infection, heart disease, sudden bleeding or a toxin that could cause death. While Lyme disease can be serious his signs aren't specific for a Lyme infection. For a specific answer tissue and/or body fluid samples as well as a post mortem exam like an autopsy would be needed. However even with those we sometimes cannot pinpoint the exact cause of a sudden death.

First off, I'm so very sorry you lost Rudis suddenly. Please accept my condolences for your loss. There could be a number of things causing his sudden death such as exposure to toxins, cancer, liver failure, heart disease, or even the bone if it caused an obstruction. Without seeing him in person, I can't say for certain. You can ask your parents to take him into the vet for a necropsy (an autopsy for animals). This may give you some answers. I'm very sorry to hear about the loss of your dog. It's possible that he may have had a stroke or blood clot secondary to his heart disease that traveled to his brain. Or, if he was regularly having collapsing episodes due to his heart (syncope), what you saw may have been one of these that was especially severe, as this is a common cause of sudden death in dogs with severe heart problems. If you want to try to get a more definite answer on what the cause of death may have been, you would need to have an autopsy done, called a necropsy in animals. Your veterinarian should be able to let you know where you can have this done, if it's something you want to pursue. Again, I'm very sorry for your loss.
