Is dog Diazepam the same as human Anxicalm or Alprazolam medication?

The short answer is, yes, they can be given together however, I suggest you check with your regular veterinarian before combining any medications. Hi there. I would recommend discussing this with Diesel's regular veterinarian. Xanax can occasionally cause something called "paradoxical agitation," meaning that the dog gets more restless and anxious rather than more relaxed, but this shouldn't suddenly happen if he's already been taking the medication and it's worked well for him in the past. There may be room to increase his dosage, or your veterinarian may recommend switching to a different anti-anxiety medication instead. We cannot legally advise you to make any changes in how you're currently giving a prescription medication, so I would call your vet in the morning to discuss your concerns.

A 1mg pill should not be dangerous if either dog got ahold of it. Dogs can safely take xanax, and 1mg is within the dose range for both dogs. It's on the higher end for your smaller dog, but it's still ok. I hope this helps!

In general diazepam is not a great sedative in dogs - it does not cause significant sedation on it's own and does not last very long - so I do not prescribe it for noise phobias. I definitely would not recommend giving a prescription medication unless it was specifically prescribed to Missy. You may want to consider calling your veterinarian and seeing if they can recommend another medication as a sedative. Otherwise you could try things like Thundershirt or playing music to muffle the sound of the fireworks.

If Xanax was an effective medication for Ali's anxiety, I would definitely say that you should stick with regimen. If the current veterinarian is not willing to provide you with a prescription for this, I would find another vet who appreciates the situation a little bit better. In terms of Prozac vs Zoloft, Prozac has much fewer side effects in dogs than Zoloft, so sickness with one does not necessarily translate to sickness with another. Behavior issues including anxiety are often very difficult to resolve so if at all possible, find a way to keep Ali on the medication she currently is have success with.

Actually now the recommend medication is gabapentin. Ask your veterinarian for some and give it before the visit. With this the cats are just mellow, easy to handle and not as drugged as with the other medications. Diazepam is not used much in cats now due to it causing liver problems. Apromazine can make them sedate but doesn’t reduce the aggression. I personally don’t find Xanax effective. Several different drugs are available for this purpose. The drugs I use the most often for this sort of situation include trazodone, alprazolam (Xanax), and acepromazine. The last of these drugs will not provide any relief for anxiety for Muttley, instead it will simply tranquilize him. The other two will have both sedative and anti-anxiety activity. Discuss the situation with your veterinarian and determine which option you believe will be best. Hope this works out. If your pup is going to be travelling in the cabin, for the sake of the other passengers the use of the tranquilizer may be the best option.
