Dog diarrhea worse with Fortiflora. Is this normal? Should I continue?

Pet's info: Dog | Golden Retriever | Male | unneutered | 7 months and 10 days old | 50 lbs

My dog is having diarrhea and the vet recommended fortiflora. His diarrhea has gotten worse since starting fortiflora. Is that normal? Should we still continue using fortiflora?

Hi there, and thanks for your question on Petco Pet Education Center, formerly Petcoach. Fortiflora is a probiotic and often helps with mild cases of diarrhea. However, with more severe or persistent diarrhea, additional therapy is warranted. I recommend continuing the Fortiflora, but you should have Charlie rechecked by the vet. If the diarrhea isn't improving, depending on what was done previously, your vet may recommend additional testing (such as x-rays), and he will likely be prescribed some additional GI supportive medications to control the diarrhea. A prescription bland food may also be recommended to help firm up his stools.

My dog's stool is still soft after meds. How can I firm it up?

Hi, Thank you for using Petco Pet Education Center, formerly Petcoach. I would recommend following up with Copper's veterinarian before his medication runs completely out. They may want to extend his prescription or recheck him. Be sure to feed whatever diet his vet has recommended with no other food or treats. Sometimes a probiotic, such as FortiFlora, can help. I would speak to his vet and follow their suggestions. Diarrhea can be caused by anything from stress to dietery indescretion to food intolerance or infection. I hope Copper is back to normal soon.

My dog has diarrhea for 5 days, what are the next steps to help?

Hello. I would recommend starting Finn on a good probiotic, as this is very important for returning the gut bacteria back to normal. FortiFlora is an excellent one & is available at PetCo. I would also start him on some Metamucil, 1/2 tablespoon twice a day. If diarrhea continues, please see your veterinarian as Finn may need either a stronger anti-diarrheal or he may need antibiotics at this point. Continue the chicken & rice ( should be 75% rice & 25% chicken ) for another couple of days. The diluted Pedialyte is an excellent idea. Why does my dog poop normal then have diarrhea and squat long?

Hi, thanks for using Petcoach! I don't think you need to be super concerned with Diesel. I recommend starting him on a bland diet of boiled chicken or hamburger mixed with rice. Feed him 3 1/2 cups per day until 2 normal stools. You can also start a probiotic. I like Purina Fortiflora. If the diarrhea persists, worsens, you see blood or he starts vomiting get him looked at by your Vet. My dog has chronic diarrhea, vet found no cause. What should I try?

I suggest you put Gus on a probiotic for a month to see if it helps. I strongly recommend you use Fortiflora (no human probiotics). Fortiflora comes as a box of 30 packets - one packet on food daily so this will give you one month to see if it helps. If it does, great, you can keep him on it indefinitely. If it doesn't help then you need to go to more testing like for inflammatory bowel disease or food allergies. My puppy has diarrhea. How long for stool improvement after new food?

Hello. It might take 3-5 days minimum to see if the diet will work. Often, when we suspect a problem is due to a food sensitivity, the food trial is 6-8 weeks. So, it can take time to see if the diarrhea subsides. Just make sure she is drinking plenty of water & not losing weight. Also, make sure you communicate to your vet that the diarrhea did not respond to the metronidazole. She may want to continue testing, switch to another antibiotic or medication. My dog's diarrhea is worse after probiotics. What should I feed her?

Thank you for contacting Petco Pet Education Center, formerly Petcoach with your question about Sammi. Poor girl. I can give you a home remedy for her to see if that helps. Withhold food for 12-24 hours, then feed a bland diet of boiled white meat chicken (no bones) and white rice in small amounts several times a day for a couple of days. Then slowly add back in her normal diet. If the diarrhea continues on the bland diet, she refuses to eat the bland diet, she starts vomiting food, stops drinking water, starts vomiting water, or becomes very lethargic, she will need to see a vet right away.
