My dog has diarrhea & vomiting for 3 days. Is an emergency vet needed?

I am very sorry to hear that Emma is experiencing these problems, I am sure it is very unsettling for you both. Unfortunately, with a history of vomiting and diarrhoea, and an inability to keep food down for 2 days, I advise you take Emma in to see her vet. There are a number of potentially very serious causes of such clinical signs, including pancreatistis and ingestion of a toxin or poison. Your vet will be able to perform a physical exam and run diagnostic tests such as bloodwork to determine the cause of Emma's vomiting and diarrhoea. Friday is way too long, he must get veterinary treatment before that, he needs an anti vomiting injection this is the first thing that needs to be done as if he carries on vomiting nothing can be given to him orally. you tried the boiled chicken and rice, this is usually my first advice as well, but since it didn't do the trick, he must see a vet ASAP.

If he is lethargic right now, I would get him seen now because he is likely dehydrated and needs fluids administered under the skin for hydration. When a pet has diarrhea for more than 24 hours, it is time for a trip to the vet. At this point, it's not recommended to use any home remedies, and medical care is required. I would take Poppy into the vet right away. Diarrhea could be caused by GI illness, intestinal worms, a sudden change in diet, eating something rotten, or a foreign body. The vet can diagnose what is causing the diarrhea, and can treat it. Poppy may need IV fluids for hydration as well.

Hello, sorry to hear about Anya. Most GI sings of diarrhea may resolve with a bland diet of plain white rice, skinless and boneless chicken, and low fat cottage cheese. However, other more severe causes of this such as liver or kidney disease, inflammation of the bowel, and ingestion of foreign material may will require that your veterinarian examine Anya. If she develops persistent vomiting or diarrhea then I would recommend having her evaluated by her primary care veterinarian as she may need bloodwork and x-rays to be prescribed the adequate medications. In the interim, monitor her for persistent vomiting (more than 3 episodes in 1 day), diarrhea with blood, severe lethargy, or loss of appetite and contact your veterinarian if you note any. 4 days is very long for a dog to have vomiting and diarrhea. I recommend that Alexa see a vet as soon as possible. Potential causes for her illness include dietary intolerance, dietary indiscretion, food allergy, intestinal parasites, GI blockage, gastroenteritis, bacterial or viral infection, IBD, pancreatitis, among others. Your vet may recommend abdominal x-rays, bloodwork, or an intestinal parasite screen to help diagnose her ailment and create an appropriate treatment plan.

Any dog which is weak with dehydratin requires fluid therapy, most likely by intravenous drip alongside treatment for the vomiting and diarrhea. Oral electrolyte solutions and medications are not sufficient if she is vomiting frequently as she will not absorb them. l strongly recommend you schedule an urgent vet check for her
