Why does my dog's diarrhea return when I feed her regular food?

I'm sorry to hear that Cleo is not doing well. If she improved on a bland diet (chicken and rice), but the signs have returned on her regular food, then I would be suspicious that the food is the cause of the problems. I would recommend resuming the chicken and rice diet to make sure that the signs again resolve with a bland diet. If that is the case, then I would recommend consulting with your veterinarian for a recommendation for food based on what you were previously feeding (brand and protein source), how large the bag was and how long the bag has been open. It may be that Cleo does not do well on that particular brand or flavor of food, it may be a bad bag, or it may have been open too long and started to spoil. Depending on which of these things is most likely, your vet will be able to give you a recommendation on what to try, but I would recommend sticking with chicken and rice for now to make sure that she is back to normal before you make any other changes. HI, some dogs have sensitive stomachs and switching foods is not recommended. One option is to make sure you are feeding her a bland food with a chicken and rice base. I would stay away form the milkbone treats and give a greenie only occasionally, not every day. If you want to be really safe, exclude all treats from her diet unless they are a bland chicken. You can even feed the Hill's ID diet life long if needed. I certainly recommend changing up her diet then staying consistent with it. Good luck, I hope this helps!

It is common that dogs will develop diarrhea from a sudden food change, but it can be challenging to do a slow diet change when they stop eating their regular diet. If Chi won't eat a bland diet, adding cooked white rice or cooked white or sweet potato to a diet may be a good option for her. I think at this point, you could continue the previous food since she was eating it well or try to introduce a new limited ingredient diet if that was what your vet had recommended. Sometimes 95% meat diets are too rich for dogs alone, but Chi may tolerate it with white rice or potato. However, you may also need to talk to your veterinarian about medication for the diarrhea since she has IBD and those dogs will sometimes have a harder time getting their diarrhea to resolve with diet change alone. Hello. It is strange to say from an internet source, but do not believe everything you read on the internet. I would switch your dog back to the Purina. It is one of the best foods from one of the most reputable companies out there. The only foods most veterinarians will recommend are the only companies that provide the proof & research that goes into making safe & complete diets. These are Purina, Science Diet & Royal Canin. It is ok to stay on the Hill's diet long-term if that is all that Orcan needs to prevent diarrhea. If you want him on another diet, you can slowly mix the two over 3-4 weeks. The first week it would be 75% Hills and 25% RC. The next week 50/50, etc. If the diarrhea comes back you can try a different RC diet for sensitive stomachs, continue feeding just the Hill's, or discuss food allergies or other possible causes for diarrhea with your vet.

It is a good sign that she improved with a bland diet, I recommend returning to chicken and rice with a probiotic such as fortiflora for 48 hours then slowly adding a sensitive puppy food (royal canin gastrointestinal junior or calibra puppy is my preferred option). Add kibble at no more than 20% every 2 days to allow the gut to adjust

I hate to hear this is happening. Any dogs with chronic diarrhea that does not respond to OTC diets needs to be examined by the veterinarian. She may have a parasite, a bacterial issue or she may need a prescription diet meant for dogs with dietary intolerance or food allergy. Blonca will need some diagnostics.
