My dog has diarrhea and itchiness. Should I try a limited ingredient diet?

Updated on September 23rd, 2025

Pet's info: Dog | Poodle | Female | unspayed | 5 months and 1 day old | 25 lbs

How do I know if my dog has a food allergy or intolerance? She gets diarrhea kind of frequently. There’s different amounts of time in between each episode, and sometimes I feel like it’s definitely garbage gut. However she also seems itchy, so I can’t rule out something else. Is there harm in switching to a limited ingredient diet?

Hi there. It does sound possible that Birdie could have some type of food allergy or intolerance. In general, there is no harm in switching to a hypoallergenic diet to see if this helps - this is really the "test" for food allergies, since we don't have a reliable way to diagnose them through lab work. I would recommend using a prescription hypoallergenic diet such as Purina HA or Royal Canin HP to ensure a reliable result.
