Does my dog need detox supplements to remove toxins from his body?

Milk thistle is safe for dogs. For milk thistle extract (not straight herb) the dose for a 38 kg dog is 190-570 mg, so 400 mg once daily is fine. I wish you the best!

Hello, and thanks for contacting Petco Pet Education Center, formerly Petcoach. The dose of terbinafine your vet prescribed is appropriate for Danny's size. This medication has a wide range of use in the literature, and vets will choose the appropriate dose for the patient and the infection they are treating. Dogs do not necessarily metabolize medications the same way people do - so often require different strength or frequency in their dosing compared to the human dose. Terbinafine is generally well tolerated by dogs, so I would not recommend adding any additional tonics or medications unless your vet guides you on this. The best way you can help support Danny's kidneys is to simply provide clean safe drinking water available at all times. If you are concerned, you might ask your vet to run some baseline bloodwork on Danny to ensure his organs are functioning properly, and you could repeat this bloodwork after his course of medication. This should provide peace of mind to make sure Danny is tolerating his medication! Hope this helps!

The majority (80-90%) of clindamycin is broken down by the liver and excreted as inactive molecules. There are a number of supplemental products which can be used to support the kidneys such as pronefra and omega fatty acids as well as diet modification to reduce the workload the kidneys have to do but these are not recommended unless kidney injury or failure has been diagnosed

This supplement shouldn't increase Danny's creatinine level. His creatinine level is 0.05 points above normal, and in my opinion it is not significant with a normal BUN. A urine specific gravity would help to determine if it is significant, as well as rechecking this value in one week to see if it is going up. I wouldn't not start kidney supplements until we know it is an issue. Increasing water consumption is the first line in preventing kidney disease.

However, I don't recommend giving supplements such as this without being directed by a vet. The most important way to support Bruno's organ function is with a good high quality food, and good preventative care (disease prevention through vaccination, parasite control, etc). Milk thistle is a great liver support, but the other ingredients have limited data in dogs and, while probably safe, I would not recommend them.

My best recommendation to supplement liver function is a supplement called Denamarin. It contains several of the known ingredients we historically used to support liver health all in one supplement. Very often, I observe my patients Liver enzymes decreasing dramatically on this supplement.

Hi, thanks for using Petco Pet Education Center, formerly Petcoach. I am not sure what is going on with Danny, but he is a young dog. The photo is very blurry but it looks as though ALL his liver enzymes are elevated: ALT, AST and ALP (alkaline phosphatase). These enzymes DO NOT indicate whether the liver is functioning normally or not. They indicate that the liver cells are leaking these enzymes in to the blood stream. This could be from liver inflammation secondary to an infection with in the liver or gallbladder, intestinal inflammation, pancreatitis, inflammatory liver conditions or cancer. In order to know if Danny's liver is functioning normally your Vet needs to do a bile acid test. Danny would go in fasted and then the Vet draws a blood sample. They then feed Danny and take a second blood sample an hour later to measure how the liver clears bile from the blood stream I hope this helps and Danny is ok
