Dog dental surgery hole not closing, nosebleed and tooth bleeding?

Hello. A fistula basically is an abnormal communication between 2 areas. In this case, the tissues surrounding the root of a bad tooth eroded into the nasal sinus. Until this tissue heals & fills in, drainage is possible. It should lesson day by day & Madison may need to be on antibiotics for a while, but the fistula should close up after a period of time ( depending on what tooth was involved & how big the fistula is. Thank you for providing such good pictures. It looks like Lars has broken part of his tooth and what you are seeing is the pulp cavity. The pulp cavity is the center of the tooth where the nerves and blood supply run. The problem with having the pulp cavity exposed is that the area will be painful, and bacteria can now get into the tooth. In order to prevent infection, either the tooth needs to be extracted or a root canal needs to be performed. If your vet doesn't perform these procedures, they can refer you to a veterinary dentist who does. But have your vet evaluate Lars and give you their recommendation. I would also recommend discussing Lars' chewing habits, so you can try to figure out what caused this, so he doesn't break any other teeth. Good luck! I hope that was helpful. Hello, thank you for your question about Roofus. Depending on the location of the hole in regards to the rest of his stitches I would be concerned that his incision may not heal properly. Since his surgery was so recent and there has been very limited time for any healing so far it is possible that Roofus could develop a build of of fluid (seroma) or blood (hematoma) which could prevent healing of his full incision. It is also possible that he could develop a surgical site infection due to this opening, although this is less likely since he is on antibiotics. I would recommend having Roofus evaluated by a veterinarian so that they can examine the surgical incision and determine the need for additional closure. If this opening is at the bottom of the incision they may elect to allow this to act as a drainage site and perform no further closure. However, if the hole is at the top or middle portion of the incision they may elect to place an additional stitch or staple to close the incision. Hope this helps, good luck!

Oh goodness, that does not look great. It seems he broke down the stitches and there is debris in the excraction site. Hopefully it is just food and debris and not an infection. Do you have a syringe? Squirt gun? Anything you could make shift to use to “rinse” out the hole? A warm water rinse to the area to try to flush out the debris may make it look a lot better. Hello. Yes, an oronasal fistula, which often occurs from severe dental abscessation, can also result in bone erosion. Once the underlying problem is addressed, such as an infection, some bone may heal, but fistulas can remain for a very long time. I'm so sorry to hear that Spike is having this problem. From your history, it sounds like the nasal discharge started before the dental operation. If that is the case and the dental did not improve the discharge, then it might be time to take some x-rays of the nose and teeth. If there is a tooth that is infected at the root, it may look normal in the mouth, but may have signs of infection on x-rays. That can also cause swelling. The only treatment will be to remove the tooth. Cancer will most commonly cause bleeding instead of just normal nasal discharge, but is always possible. Unfortunately, it sounds like Spike needs some more testing to figure out what is going on and determine the best treatment to make him feel better. Good luck! I hope that was helpful. Yes, I recommend making an appointment to have Roxy seen by a vet. The lesion may be painful, and could become infected if left untreated. Pain medications meant for humans can be very dangerous (and even deadly) for dogs, so I do not recommend giving any to your pup without consulting with your vet.
