My dog died. Can a vet review the report for a second opinion?

I'm so sorry to hear about the loss of your dog! I know how hard it is to have a pet pass away suddenly like this, without any warning. From what you're describing here, I would be suspicious of a sudden cardiac arrhythmia, or a tumor in his heart or abdomen that may have ruptured suddenly - both of these are relatively common causes of sudden death in middle-aged or older large-breed dogs. With either of these problems, there is usually nothing anyone can do - even if it happened in the lobby of your vet's office and they were able to start working on him immediately, it's unlikely that this would have made any difference at all. So try not to feel guilty. It sounds like you did the best you could, and I don't believe it would have changed the outcome even if you had left immediately for the vet's office. Again, I'm very sorry for your loss. If you think it would help you to have piece of mind, you could ask your veterinarian about arranging for an autopsy to be done (called a necropsy in animals). This would be the best way to determine what the cause of death was.

I am very sorry for your loss. if he is still at your vet clinic in the freezer it is still possible to have a necropsy done although i am not sure it's something you want to have done if you already know the cause of the illness.

Hello, I am very sorry to hear about your dog Brewki's passing. Unfortunately, I do not have enough information to give you a good answer. I would have to know what type of white blood cells were elevated and how low the red blood cell count was to be of much help. Without all of the medical records it is extremely hard to give council. If you would like, you can chose to do a private consult with one of our vets. That way you can chat back and forth and if you have copies of the bloodwork you can upload those results. I agree with the previous veterinarian though, the Clavamox and Doxycycline administration together likely had nothing to do with his passing. Those two antibiotics are often given concurrently without incidence. When an animal passes away unexpectedly, the only real chance you have to know what may have caused the death is to have a necropsy (autopsy) done on the body but even with that, often times we don't get a definitive answer. Your vet did the right thing. I'm so sorry Pich passed away but I do not believe your daughter had anything to do with it. She did not cause the dog to have a tumor. You also need to not place blame on the veterinarian. They did the best they could to help. Unfortunately, not everything turns out the way we hoped despite the best treatment. The dog had a history of seizures which were probably caused by the underlying tumor. There is no way for anyone to have known that. I know it is heartbreaking but you all need to stop blaming yourselves. It is a living animal and, just like a person, things happen out of our control. I really thing you and your family should speak to a grief counselor. HI, thanks for using Petco Pet Education Center, formerly Petcoach! Poor Yogi! I am sorry you are going through this. It is hard to jump in to a case like this with only a CT image. It might be better for you to sign up for a consult with one of out Vets to have a one on one text conversation. My impression of the CT is that there is a mass in Yogi's chest, in the mediastinum. There is abnormal fluid accumulation likely from the mass and there are also suspicious nodules with in his lung tissue. Which I think is safe to assume is metastatic. If Yogi was my dog and he had a chest tumor with suspected metastatic disease I wouldn't pursue further diagnosistics or surgery as his prognosis is very poor. To put him through a painful surgery when it has spread seems unfair for him. If the "biopsy" was really an aspirate they tend to sometimes be non-diagnostic as most tumor cells do not exfoliate well in to a needle. A true tissue sample would be needed. I am not sure knowing which type of cancer he has will change how I would proceed. Another option is to see a Veterinary Specialist. I would recommend an Oncologist. Sitting down with all the tests and having a discussion may help you. You can also call your Vet and ask to sit and talk about the results with out Yogi present. I am so sorry to hear about the loss of your loved one. I doubt this was from bringing in the new dog. There are a lot of other things that could have happened and it is most likely coincidence that it happened shortly after you brought in the new puppy. I wish I had a definitive answer for you, but without an autopsy there is no way to know for sure. Please know you are in my thoughts.
