Why did my 14-year-old Labrador die with a growth and swollen nipple?

Poor girl. A photo would help here. Please repost with a photo of your pets enlarged mammary gland. IF she was spayed after she turned 1 year of age, there is a hig risk of mammary cancer. Swelling can also be caused by an infected mammary gland. I would have this mammary gland tested through your vet to ensure this isn't cancerous if it is not red and if the swelling is firm and knotty. The most common lymph nodes that we can feel on the outside are the ones under the jaw/neck, the prescapular (where the front legs meet the neck) and the popliteals (behind the knees or "knee pit"). If you are able to feel lymph nodes that are larger than 1 cm to egg sized then the most common reason is lymphoma. Especially in a dog Ace's age and with the weight loss. It is easy to diagnose lymphoma by aspirating the lymph nodes. Chemotherapy is the treatment of choice but sometimes steroids alone can give a couple of months of good time. I work with cancer daily and I do think there is a good chance that it is in fact a benign fatty tumor as older labs get those frequently. However, it could also be something malignant such as a mast cell tumor, sarcoma, among others. This is most of the time differentiated with a test called a fine needle aspirate which is easy, cheap and pain-free. Sometimes, a biopsy is required for a diagnosis. Have Laya evaluated by your veterinarian to have this test performed to try to sort out what the diagnosis is so that the best course of action can be determined. Keeping my fingers crossed that it is something benign!

To say it is Lymphoma it would have to be one of her lymph nodes. Typically when it is lymphoma more then one lymph node will be enlarged. If the lymph node is what is getting larger it is not always lymphoma. It can be from an infection draining, it can be viral or it can even be a tick borne disease causing the increase in the size. I recommend having a veterinarian evaluate Jamber and have them see if it is a lymph node and if so typically an aspirate is recommended and a tick panel to rule out lymphoma and tick borne diseases. If they do find lymphoma I would recommend at least a consult with a veterinary oncologist. They will be able to give you the most up to date information on different Chemotherapy options and see if this is the best option for Jamber and your family. Hello. At Molly's great age, the presence of kidney failure & mammary tumors, I agree with your veterinarian that it is best to keep her as comfortable as possible from here on out. I do not think her kidney issues are from infection, although a urinalysis may be more helpful here. The high BUN & creatinine plus her anemia indicates end stage renal failure. The swelling of the mammary gland may just be edema associated with her kidney disease, or the spread of her mammary cancer. It is impossible to tell just from a picture. 14 years is a very long life for a large breed dog like Molly. You have obviously loved & cared for her all her life. Please stay in touch with your veterinarian & follow all recommendations about pain control, & keeping her comfortable. I hope for whatever time she has, it is quiet & comfortable for everyone. Thanks for using Petco Pet Education Center, formerly Petcoach! It is not possible to know for sure what it is without being able to evaluate it under the microscope. This could be a benign or malignant growth. This is often differentiated by a test called a fine needle aspirate (FNA) which is a pain free, inexpensive and easy procedure which in most cases will help reach a diagnosis. Sometimes a biopsy is needed for a definitive diagnosis. I recommend that you have his evaluated by your veterinarian for further assessment and treatment. I am really hoping for something benign. Lymph nodes can become enlarged due to inflammation, infection or cancer. Seeing that Diamond is a boxer breed, is 7 years old, losing weight and has enlarged lymph nodes leads me to suspect something such as Lymphoma (a type of cancer) as the cause. I would recommend having this further worked up with a veterinarian and have further testing done such as a needle aspirate and cytology to help determine what it could be. This test is not that expensive and can tell a veterinarian a lot about the area tested. I hope this helps guide you in the right direction.
