My dog has a dark, hard spot on his hip. Is it skin cancer or other?

The lump may be a benign or malignant growth. This could even be an infection. This cannot be completely assessed just by looking at pictures or a description and usually requires sampling such as fine needle aspiration to determine its origin. Sometimes a biopsy is needed for a definitive diagnosis. I recommend that you have him evaluated by your veterinarian for further assessment and treatment. I am really hoping for something benign. This is often differentiated by a test called a fine needle aspirate (FNA) which is a pain free, inexpensive and easy procedure which in most cases will help reach a diagnosis. However, continue to monitor them closely because sometimes skin cancer such as melanoma can start like that. If these ever become raised or seem to bother him or appear to be spreading, have him evaluated by a veterinarian for further assessment and treatment. This lump under Behr's skin is most likely something benign like a cyst or lipoma, however there is a small chance it could be something cancerous. At such a young age cancer is unlikely but not impossible. If the growth doesn't go away within a few days or it gets larger it would be a good idea to have Behr examined by a veterinarian. If necessary a small needle aspirate can be taken from the lump and looked at under the microscope to determine if it should be removed surgically. Though I cannot diagnose Mindy without seeing her in person, I would be happy to share some possible causes and advice on next steps. This could be a benign growth, similar to a mole or freckle on a person or a malignant growth (cancer). Several types of cancer can affect the skin, particularly lighter areas that have less hair. The area does not seem to be infected, as there is no discharge, redness, or swelling, but a bacterial or fungal infection is a possibility. You can have Mindy evaluated by a veterinarian who can take a small piece, or biopsy of the area to definitively diagnose the growth. This may require light sedation or general anesthesia to completely remove it. You can continue to monitor the area for an increase in size, margins, change in color, or additional discharge. If you notice any change in Mindy, you should definitely have her examined by a veterinarian as soon as possible. I hope this helps!

If you believe that this spot has appeared rapidly or suddenly, and if it is changing in size or appearance, I recommend making an appointment with your veterinarian to have it examined. Otherwise, you can monitor the spot over time and look for changes. Pigmented areas on the skin can be benign, but unfortunately, they could also indicate malignant forms of cancer, such as melanoma. Your veterinarian will be able to examine the area, and can take a biopsy of the site to send for histopathology to determine what cell types are present. I hope this is helpful!

This may be a histiocystoma, which is benign tumor that typically goes away on its own. Unfortunately I cannot say for sure without seeing him in person. Because there is a change any lump in a dog his age could be cancerous, I would get it checked out by a vet to be safe. Give his vet a call in the morning to make him an appointment.
