My pet has dark diarrhea after Pepto Bismol. Should I go to the vet?

If the diarrhea doesn’t improve within a few days or if any other symptoms emerge then I would encourage you to have her evaluated by your veterinarian. I do not recommend giving Benji Pepto Bismol, as it can lead to toxicity. Take a fecal sample from him in with you in case the vet wants to run tests on it.

Hi and thank you for using PetCoach. If your puppies are having mild diarrhea that has not lasted over 6 hours, eating fine and acting normally with no vomiting, then it can be safe. However, it is just a band aid and does not fix the underlying problem as to WHY they are having diarrhea. If the diarrhea has persisted longer than a few hours, the puppies are not eating, they are vomiting or lethargic, I would not give Pepto Bismol. Hello and thank you for reaching out to Petco Pet Education Center, formerly Petcoach. Yes, it looks like Snowy is having some diarrhea. Diarrhea can be caused by a number of things, ranging from dietary indiscretion (he ate something he shouldn't have), diet change, gastrointestinal parasites (worms), or other organ system diseases like liver disease, kidney disease, pancreatitis, etc. I recommend feeding Snowy a bland diet such as boiled (unseasoned) chicken or hamburger and rice, in a ratio of 2 parts rice to 1 part meat, for the next 3-4 days, to help firm up his stools. You can also try adding in a small amount of Metamucil (original, unflavored) powder to this food. Metamucil is an over-the-counter fiber supplement for people that we often use to help dogs with diarrhea. He would likely benefit from about 1/4 teaspoon of Metamucil in his food twice a day. If you are not noticing an improvement in his diarrhea after 2-3 days, I recommend bringing him (and a sample of his stool) to your veterinarian. At that time, a fecal analysis can be performed, and any other diagnostics as needed. I hope this is helpful! Best of luck with Snowy!

I would recommend having Golia get checked out by a vet. I always recommend a quick checkup for any diarrhea that lasts longer than 24 hours. Sometimes it is just a simple upset stomach that will respond to a round of prescription medications. It could also be caused by intestinal parasites. Or it could be an indicator of other illness, such as bacterial or viral infections or IBD. Some dogs will respond to adding 1/2 a tablespoon of canned pumpkin (for fiber) in their food twice a day, but if Golia isn't better tomorrow, it is best to be evaluated by a vet. The signs seems settling so I would not be extremely concerned at this stage. As a first approach, I would suggest to start feeding with a bland diet based on boiled chicken and rice in small portion every 6 hours for the following 48hours. Then gradually reintroduce the normal diet over 5 days. I would definitively recommend a veterinary check up if the signs persist or you notice vomiting, lethargy or inappetence. Hello! Thank you for posting your question! If you haven't tried pepto bismol, you can give that a try and give Rosie 2tsp every 8hrs. I would also begin a bland diet such as boiled chicken breast and rice until the diarrhea resolves. You can also try and add a probiotic such as Fortiflora. I would not give the pepto bismol for more than 24 hours. If the diarrhea is worsening and not resolving, i would bring a stool sample to your vet to have it tested. There are other medications that your vet will habe to help resolve the diarrhea. If Rosie ate something she normally doesn't eat, this could have caused a dietary indiscretion.
