What are the best ways to treat my dog's dandruff and dry skin?

First thing I would do is brush Raskal daily. This helps distribute the coat's natural oils and massage the skin. There are pet shampoos designed for dogs with dandruff, which you can get from a pet store. I would try using one of those on him. Do not overbathe him, however, as that can lead to drying out of the skin. Follow the directions on the dandruff shampoo and do not use a human one! Only use one labeled for dogs. You can add an an omega-3 fatty acid supplement to his diet in the form of fish oil pills. He can have 1,000 mg fish oil containing 300 mg of EPA/ DHA combined for every 30 pounds of body weight. Finally, it could be his diet causing the problem. I personally am not a fan of Blue Buffalo, as are many of my colleagues. There have been too many recalls on the product, plus proof they have no quality control over how their food is made. In addition, vets have reported seeing many health problems in dogs on this food, including skin problems and hemorrhagic gastroenteritis. The truth is that grain free food is a fad, and there have been no proven scientific benefits to a grain free diet. In fact, research is coming out that the use of lentils in these grain free diets have lead to taurine deficiency, causing heart disease in dogs later in life. I would consider switching his diet to something containing grains to see if that helps, such as Royal Canin, Hill's Science Diet, Purina ProPlan, or Iams. I'm not sure what kind of shampoo you used on Hazel, but it could have dried her skin out, leading to the white flakes (dandruff). You can try giving her a bath with Vitamin E oil, which will help moisturize her skin. An oatmeal bath may help, and you can try that instead of a Vitamin E bath. You can also give her a Vitamin E supplement, which helps with dry skin.

Adding fish oil can be considered regardless to help with the dry skin. You can use the commercial kind for dogs. There are many things that can cause allergies though in most cases they can be broken down into 3 big categories: flea, food and environmental allergies. Allergies are usually worked up in a stepwise fashion starting with flea allergies as this is the easiest and cheapest to take care of. If not on a flea preventative, then it would be a good idea to get started on one. If already on one then it would be a good idea to change to something else (there are many new products out in the market). If not improved in 1-3 months then it is time to move on and check for food allergies by switching to a novel diet (new protein and new carbohydrate). If that does not seem to be the issue then you are left out having to check for environmental allergies which require blood and/or skin tests. Allergies can be very frustrating to deal with at first but so rewarding at the end when we are able to treat them effectively!
