Dog cut paw pad. What home treatment or pain relief until vet visit?

Hello. I am sorry that Rey has a cut. Foot pads are notoriously difficult to heal due to the constant motion and pressure. They often get infected so getting antibiotics on board might be a good idea. Also, keeping it bandaged when she is walking, and open to the air when she is resting is a good idea. You have to be VERY careful with bandages in dogs, as a bandage that is too tight can cause swelling and you can actually kill the leg and it can require amputation. Make sure any bandage is placed and attached just using attachment to the hair, and not by pressure around the leg. If you are unsure you should have this done by a vet clinic. An E-collar or cone to prevent licking/chewing of the wound as well as the bandage is a good idea as well, because she likely will lick/chew it when you aren't around, even if she isn't when you are present. Also, pain management and anti-inflammatories from your vet might be a good idea. Do not use any human products as they can cause kidney failure. I would recommend a visit to your vet for these aspects. Good luck with Rey.

Try soaking it in some warm water with Epsom salt if he will allow it-- this is easiest to do by putting the water and epsom salt in a plastic bag and putting his paw into the plastic bag. If you can do this for about 10 minutes or so, that may help if he has any debris , sticker, grass seed, etc that is embedded in the skin. If he is licking at it, be sure to put an Ecollar (cone of shame) on him. Dry it with a towel then allow to air dry, then you can use this product on it: If it is not improving within a couple of days, take him in to your vet. Thanks for asking PetCoach!

This wound appears to be superficial so your initial decontamination with the warm water and soaking it in epsom salt should be enough. I would recommend keeping a close eye on this and making sure the foot does not become swollen and that there is no pus coming from the wound. You can soak the foot in epsom salt solution twice daily until this is healed. If Duke is going to be going outside in the dirt I would recommend putting a booty over his foot or a sock to prevent dirt from getting inside the wound. If there are any changes that indicate infection, I would recommend having a veterinarian examine Duke so that the most appropriate diagnostic and treatment recommendations can be made. This looks like a cut on the pad in the picture. You can soak Solomom's foot in warm water twice daily and gently cleanse it with some antibacterial soap. The warm water should be soothing and if you gently massage his foot while it's in the water you should be able to clean the area and feel if there is something in the foot. I wouldn't put anything on this as that will encourage licking. Foot injuries are painful. If the area gets more swollen and red, or he's not walking on it better in a day or so then I would bring him in for and exam. He may need antibiotics if the cut gets infected. I'm sorry to hear that Brian seems so uncomfortable. Unfortunately, there are no safe over the counter pain medications that can be given to dogs. The most effective way to manage his pain is by taking him to his vet for prescription-based pain medication. Depending on the type of wound, a cool or warm compress can briefly ease discomfort. If Brian is licking at his paw, be sure to keep an e-collar (cone) on him until you can get to the vet. Ouch, poor Oakley! Gently wash his paw with warm water and antiseptic soap. Bandage it and put a sock over his foot to keep the bandage clean and dry. Change the bandage daily and keep an eye out for signs of infection. They include redness, swelling, warmth to the touch, and pus. If you see any of those signs, take him into the vet for antibiotics. He's limping because he is in pain, so rest him for now. No running, jumping, or playing. Take him out to toilet on leash only, and bring him right back in when he's done. Please do not give him any human pain medication. Many are toxic to dogs and can be fatal if given. Sometimes they can be closed, other times bandaging may be best. Ideally wounds should be addressed as quickly as possible to allow for optimal healing.
